Cavo Doro Hotel

Accommodation in Kalamaki

We went in September 2001, didn't think the staff were too friendly apart from the girl who worked on reception in the evenings. The man behind the pool bar seemed ok, but didn't really spend much tome in that bar. Rooms were basic but clean, nitemare having to get used to having no shower curtain or a bit to hold the shower head. For a self catering apt it was a bit odd that there was no kettle. Pool area was nice, Kalamaki itself is lovely, beach and shops within a few minutes walk. Loved Mermaids. Going back in sept this year, staying in another hotel tho.

Many thanks from the Norris family for a great two weeks. The hotel staff were friendly, the rooms clean, and the bars great value especially the pool bar, Labis could do no wrong. A great place for families and children.

Just back from 2nd hol in Kalamki this year - and once again made to feel so welcome by Akis, Georgie and co, even though we stayed in Dina. An excellent bar to finish off after a night at Angels. Excellent stuff - see you next year folks!

Can anybody tell me what the one bedroom apartments are like. What the facilities are like. Are there any shops locally. Anybody got any nice places to eat, breakfast or dinner. Is the price of beer reasonable. Do they sell sweet cidar anywhere. You replies would be appreciated, flying out on 2

We went for two weeks and stayed in Cavo Doro. We thought that the maids were very good and kept it very clean. The only problem was that the rooms were pretty small. We had four people in our room. My mum and Dad had a double bed and me and my brother had bunk beds. It was alright to sleep in but getting ready to go out at night was a disarster and so was keeping the room tidy. Apart from that the pool and the seroundings were really nice. I would recommend this if you had a small family.

we stayed at the Cava D'oro for the second time & it was great!! but this year we all missed George who worked behind the pool bar, but the staff were still great & they made our holiday for us!! if enybody goes say "HHIIII!!!!" to Akis, Georgia, Yanni, Costas, Ectoras, Frank and Tasos!!! for super keith and his family!!(they will understand!!) and the roof top garden restaurant at chives was brilliant!!!!

Paolo

Went ot the Cavo Doro hotel with my girlfriend in June 01. Had a wonderful time. Akis the barman helped make our holiday.........Thank you See you next year

Chris C

i agree with staff - see earlier posting....especially about the Pool Bar - the guy Labis was vile. Did you find him OK and did he rip you off at all?

Herbub

I was a little bit disappointed with the staff at the Cavo doro studios. They were not particularly friendly and we took our business else where for the 2 weeks we stayed with them. We shopped in another shop, we drank in other bars and ate elsewhere too. We even found a better swimming pool at the Hotel Kleia (I think this is the right spelling I am not sure). Unless you got up very early and put a towel on the sun bed you had no chance in getting near the pool. The swimming pools depth marks are very very wrong. The swimming pool was quite small and not that great. NOW DO NOT GET ME WRONG WE HAD A GREAT HOLIDAY AT KALAMAKI. THE BEACH IS LOVELY AND MANY OF THE TAVERNAS WERE LOVELY. THE ROOMS ALTHOUGH BASIC WERE QUITE NICE. IT WAS NICE WHEN YOU CAME BACK TO YOUR APARTMENT AND WAS ABLE TO HAVE A DRINK ON THE TERRACE! I AGREE VERY SMELLY TOILET SYSTEM. BY THE END OF THE 2 WEEKS HOLDIAY MY LITTLE GIRL DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THROWING TOILET PAPER DOWN THE LOO - BLESS HER SHE HAD GO VERY USED TO THE GREEK WAY.

Allison, the one-bedroom apts that we stayed in (the new building)are a good size, and will accomodate the four of you quite well. The bedroom has two single beds, dressing table, wardrobe, and bedside cabinets. The main room has table and chairs, fridge, sink, two ring cooker, fan, and cupboards (no TV). The two further beds are the settee and a mattress which slides out from underneath. My comments regarding the bathroom are below. With regard to your children they'll probably spend most of their time in the pool, although you'll have to bring/buy your own inflatables. Additionally, you can use any pool in Kalamaki so there is a good choice, and the beach is only 5 minutes away. The Cavo D'oro does have table football, tv, and an arcade machine in reception. Generally, it's a good resort for all kids aged 6+ (in my opinion).

Alison W

we are going in May 2002 how much room is there in a one bed apartment ?there are 2 adults 2 kids going . Is there any thing to keep kids 8 and 10 years amused ?

Mike T

No offence taken Chris. Generally, I really liked the resort, and may go back to Cavo D'oro again when the kids are a bit older, and not as dependent on their old man!! Have a good one in September.

Chris C

Sorry Mike I wasn`t having a go at you mate! I totally agree about the toilet situation - this is due to the Greek plumbing system and is the same in all the resort - I agree it`s well out of date and when I stayed in Plubis the cleaner didn`t come round for 3 days so we put the bin outside the owners flat to make a point! I know when I went in 98 I had 2 bad doses of food poisoning from restaurants - i would recommend people not to have ice (unless brought in) and watch for bar staff using their hands to put ice in your glass, avoid salads (washed in the water), and not to try anything seafood or things that you know in England can`t be stored long (pate, dairy products etc). I sympathise with your son because I know how ill it makes you from my own experiences. once again Mike no offence intended with my posting!

Mike T

Just to clarify my earlier comment. My 2 year old had Gastro-Enteritis (I think that's how you spell it) while we were staying at Cavo D'Oro. I am not saying that this was caused by a lack of cleanliness at the hotel, however the use of a bin for your toilet paper, combined with the abundance of flies certainly did not help. This was a general comment and not aimed individually at Cavo D'oro

Chris C

I think the comment below was a bit harsh - Greek standards are admittedly a bit behind the UK but having stayed in Plubis apartments and others I think the Cavo D`oro was good value for money. The girl on reception with glasses and dark hair was very helpful, the others I agree with the comment below, didn`t smile a lot! Interesting to note that most people were happy with the Pool Bar which was my only gripe of the holiday, due to Labis` inability to smile and tendency to overcharge (and no it wasn`t just me - at least 5 others were charged above menu price repeatedly - so much so that after day 4 I opted to go to the shop to buy things). The hotel rooms were well cleaned and, although typically small, adequate, and Akis in the Hotel Bar was an excellent guy - nothing was too much trouble. I`m going back last week in September - got a bargain holiday and staying in Dina Apartments, and will be visiting Angels bar most nights! I agree with the comment below about sunbeds - the first week we had no problem - the second it was as though the Germans had invaded with 3 groups rising at dawn to cover the sunbeds - even when not using them till teatime - not on folks! Overall though a good hotel and I would certainly return....

Mike T

I can't agree with many of the comments being made here, as I didn't find the Cavo D'oro to be as good as others have made out. On the positive side, the pool bar run by Labi "Come On" was excellent, with a large selection of drinks and a good choice of food. The ladies on reception were helpful, although it wouldn't harm them to smile more often. I don't think that this hotel is suited to young families i.e. those with children under the age of 5. The pool is unsuitable due to the limited shallow end , and the maximum depth - 10 ft. Additionally, the pool is too small for the number of guests, and you have to be come a German for a fortnight to secure a sunbed. The apartment bathrooms floors are tiled, and as the shower has no curtain and is handheld, spillage of water across the tiles is inevitable. This is very dangerous for the infirm and the young. There are a number of steep steps around the complex which again are not suitable for the infirm or the young - a simple handrail would be an advantage. Returning to the positive, the hotel is right in the centre of the resort with some excellent restaurants and bars close by, and is a short walk to an excellent beach. This isn't somewhere that I would return to until the children are older. (Isn't it about time the Greeks sorted out their drainage systems, given the amount of tourist money that is pouring in - surely it can't be healthy to continue.)

when staying here go to labi's pool bar.relaxing great company every drink you can think of and served with a smile at all time's. Best pool bar on the island and labi will always be happy to please. 10 out of 10 all round were going back in october to live it all again..THANK'S LABI FOR MAKING A GREAT HOLIDAY BETTER. DAVID AND FAMILY

Ian T

Very good hotel for families, although noisy at night, due to people returning. This was at 3-4am, with small children, and did spoil it a bit, as everyone got very tired. I would request a top floor apartment next time, and away from the stair wells. Would recommend it to other families and go again.

We stayed in the new block at Cavo D'Oro which had great views of the sea and of Kalamaki. Only problem we had was that we didn't get hot water all the time-generator problem apparently! The location of the hotel was superb-near the beach, shops(minimarket next door),bars and restaurant. The room was clean and all the staff were really friendly. The facilities are basic-no tv in room, no games room but there is a table football and arcade machine at the front of hotel and anything else you want is within walking distance! You cant not like Kalamaki and has everything you want virtually apart from watersports and the clubs are nearby in Laganas!

Just back from 2 weeks at Cava Dora, last minute booking with Airtours. Allocation on arrival. Everything went great, appartment fine, very clean and linen changed every other day. A few steps up to reception then some more (about 6) up to pool area and appartments. Short walk to beach and plenty of fine bars / eating places close to hand. No cash machines ! only banks are in Zante town. You can cash travellers cheques or change english £ at most shops but we had eurocheques so couldn't use them. Had to go to Laganas for a cash machine & had to use Visa card (no Link) People very friendly and english spoken all over the island. As someone else said, only problem was we flew back at 6.00am Friday morning and had to be out of appartment 10.00am Thursday! Spent the day at the beach, used the curtesy room (free) to shower and change, then ate & then watched free film (Pearl Harbour) at local hotel. Last couple of hours (1.00am - 3.30am) were the worst, waiting for the coach to pick us up. But overall a great holiday and would definitely go again.

Check this place out. good for young and old alike. Say hello to the delightful barman and of course the delightful Desse. If you go, tell her she should be a model, see what she says. ;-) Great bar, nice pool, excellent restaurant and only minutes from bars and the beach. Cool.

Emma C

Just got back and had a superb time. Beach is only about 2 minute walk, restaurants and bars are all on one road so not far to walk at all. Make sure you hire a car and visit the shipwreck and blue caves (not suitable for young children though). Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. If you go say hello to Akis behind the bar in the evening for us!! Would definitely go back again.

It was clean and reasonably comfortable but I'd certainly recommend taking a good mosquito net and try to get an apartment on an upper floor(not the ground)-reason we didn't feel safe leaving the door open at night to try and stay cool. We were woken up at 3am one night by a drunk nutter who was convinced his girlfriend was in our room. He then went round to the window. scary.

Sandra C

We visited these apartments when we stayed at Kalamaki last year and were impressed enough to book them for ourselves and our 2 children (12 & 14 yrs) this August. They are very central for everything, you are bang in the middle of some very good restaurants and there is a lovely beach, Crystal Beach, within 2 mins walk. Also the beach stretches right around. They appeared to be very clean and we were shown around by an off duty rep who recommended them to us for future booking. I think they would be perfect for you.

Holidaying at Cavo D'Oro in July this year. Brochure advises Hotel close to resort centre and beach. As I have two young children (one in a pushchair) do not want extensive walks to restaurants etc. Can anyone advise on (a) accessibility within the hotel and (b) the beach/resort centre. Thanks, Mike Tynan
