Sugar Reef

Restaurants in Kalamaki

Andrew H  (25 June 2004)

I've run out of superlatives after our week's dining at the beginning of June. If you see Roast Lamb on the menu, go for it! Dennis and Ianni will look after you well and Angela's cooking is sure to tempt you to explore the menu again, and again, and .... But don't take my word for it, make your own mind up. Dennis, will be in touch soon and hope to see you all in October.

PS If you like chocolate, and like cocktails, ask Dennis to make you a Dark Horse.

Tracey H  (24 June 2004)

Iwas over in Zakynthos twice last summer and went into the Sugar Reef all the time Myself and my girl friend were very impressed with everything from the staff to the food and drink,Dennis was most helpful and very genuine and will go out of his way to help you.the cocktails were out of this world, I've tasted cocktails on the island and they were good I thought, until I tried the ones Dennis makes they are an experience,so any one goes to the Sugar Reef after you've had your excellent meal, the cocktail is a must ask Dennis for a cocktail called an "Easy J".We are looking forward to going there this summer. Also Hello to Scott Collie, Dennis's email address is......sugarreefshakers@yahoo.co.uk

Back in Kalamaki for the eighth year and one thing never changes, the fabulous food and service at Sugar Reef. Denis is not only a great cocktail shaker but someone who can make a simple lunch extra special!
With his wonderful mother Angela (she makes the best spicy pizza in the world, by the way)he has created a venue that is NOT just a sports bar but a place to make real friends. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Kev H  (15 September 2003)

OK, I,ve read all the other comments but this is basically a restaurant with a bar attached and a big telly. Food is good but strikes me as being the sort of place for having a meal, getting off your face and watching the match without moving off your backside! Personally I prefer to do these 3 activities in at least 2 different places.

Christine C  (13 September 2003)

I originally visited the island and went to the Sugar Reef when it first opened quite a few years ago now. This place is fantastic and is certainly the best on the island. The restaurant also has the best cocktail bar around. The barman really knows how to mix a drink or two! This barman is not only originally from Australia but yes it is true also visited the Big Apple (New York City and won awards in New York for his mixing skills. If you want great food, freindly and fun atmosphere and the best drinks on the island then this is the place to go to. This is a place you have to go to when visiting the beautiful island of Zakynthos. Greetings from Manhattan in New York City

Anne A  (30 August 2003)

Just returned from 2 weeks and ate every night at Sugar Reef-drank lots too!Keef says "John Smiths best on Island" and also liked complimentary Banana Brandy!!Food excellent-Well Done Angela!Big Thanks also to Dennis,Yiannis and Forte for excellent service..Would (and do)highly recommend the Sugar Reef to everybody.See you all in May!!

Kev P  (29 August 2003)

For all the sports fans the shakers bar is were you can watch sports all day long. And its not just football there is also cricket tennis etc..

Sophie L  (11 August 2003)

My little bros favourite restaurant, the food was quick, cheap and nice. We went here twice and really enjoyed it. We especially like the free melon which we got with the meal.

Sandie S  (10 August 2003)

Good choice of food ( even childs menu ) and nice surrondings.

Andrew H  (18 July 2003)

Second visit this year and the food remains just of the highest quality. Had time to also try one of Dennis' cocktails - thoroughly recommended. Thanks again, Dennis, Angela, Ianni and Faulti (not sure if I got those names right !)

Claire G  (25 June 2003)

Meal for 2 adults and 1 child 24Euro. Excellent value as starters, main course and drinks plus complimentary bread and the owner sent over complimentary spirit when we paid the bill. (some sort of banana liquer) Service excellent especially with our 3 year old who was a bit of a handfull. Would recommend.

Steven L  (07 June 2003)

we have been here for the past nine years and have just come back from a week in May, the food is excellent and so are the drinks, the waiters are really friendly, Angela is lovely and so is her food, can't wait until we return in August to see them all again and eat the really nice food (especially Supreme pizza!) 10/10!

Aubrey S  (03 June 2003)

we`ve been to kalamaki six times now and tried a few restaurants but the one we keep going back to is sugar reef because we know that every meal we have there will be excellent without fail.angela is a great cook and never has an off day.it has the best bar in zante also with 100% real mcCoy spirits(no cheap stuff)and dennis, the best barman in zante who has won awards in new york for his cocktail making.

Jezebel G  (02 June 2003)

This one has a really unusual menu with a taste of France about it, as well as some dishes not seen anywhere else in Greece. The decor is really odd - it looks like a fast food joint outside which is a real shame, as inside the walls have beautiful murals, the tables are clothes and it's a great place for a classy romantic meal. Why the rear is used as a sanctuary for retired John Smiths Men cut outs is baffling. The cocktails are individually made with fresh fruit and cream and are delicious, as is the food. Highly recommended!

Barbara C  (23 May 2003)

Thanks Dennis & Angela for helping to make our holiday fantastic. Enjoyed all the food and drinks especially the 'bakewell tarts'. Hope Vic,Robert & Scott bring me again. Luv Barbara xx

Andrew H  (12 May 2003)

What can I say - the food was really wonderful and Dennis and Angela looked after us really well. What a choice for a menu - it would take all summer to savour. Recommend the Tsourki, Curry, Beef Stifado, Mezedes - the list goes on. Don't forget to sample the Greek Yoghourt and Honey.

For the sports fans, the Shakers bar is an excellent place to sit back, chill out, relax .... and, what else, watch sport !

Adi P  (27 April 2003)

We have been to the island the past seven years and am going again in four weeks. You carn't go wrong with dennis's cocktails. Angela's cooking is great. c ya in four weeks Adi and Family

best place for a pizza, salad and a few drinks. always good service and value for money, the mixed starter platter is huge,

Steven L  (29 September 2002)

Dennis and Angela are very friendly people and their food is probably the best on the island. The atmosphere was good and Dennis's cocktails are excellent. I am speaking from experience of the last nine visits to the island.

Roger   (26 September 2002)

Paid a couiple of visits in 2000 when we first went to Zakynthos and thought we'd go back to see if it was as good as we remmyd. Heck, it was better. CAn only echo all the good words about the atmosphere, food and great people. Even better now that our 3 year old chats up the men rather than screaming at them........

Susan   (18 September 2002)

WE HAVE BEEN COMING BACK FOR 5YRS AND CAN'T WAIT FOR JUNE 13TH TO VISIT THE SUGAR REEF AGAIN THEY MAKE US FEEL LIKE FAMILY.

Kevin B  (10 May 2002)

we have been going for the last 5 years. The food is excellent and the waiters and manager a good laugh. try the swordfish ( fabulous ),Redsnapper out of this world , all of his specials are well worth a try. ( can not wait untill june ).

Simon A  (09 March 2002)

The owners where from australia, and had no clue what the hell they where doing. could not have had a worse meal. Try castelos, chives and hongkong also mermaids great place.

J V  (30 October 2001)

Having shopped around at various restaurants and tourist bars we (wife & three children)found that this was an excellent place to eat. The food was of a good standard, but the shining light was their octopus in chilli sauce- absolutely excellent (we went back three times). Service was polite and fast every time and compared to some of the other 'restaurants' this place was well worth the visit. Forget Mermaids and similar, give Sugar Reef a go - you wont be disappointed. Went in July.

Mark D  (24 August 2001)

Unfriendly welcome as we arrived, then we had the bread slammed in front of us. Food was o.k. but not wonderful. Agree with the other comments the staff do seem very snobby. Go to Zepos instead!

Lee P  (17 July 2001)

infact we loved it and we have done for the past 4 years its a reason we go back. as for the manager being a poofter i think u have the wrong bar try it for yourselves and u wont be disappointed.

Suzanne H  (02 June 2001)

Not many vegetarian options, so we ordered vegetable curries. When it came, it was a mound of mixed veg mixed with curry powder surrounded by chips! It was vile! The manager said no one else had complained about it in four years! We chose the vegetarian pizza instead which was good.

Barry C  (02 February 2001)

We ate there we we went the first time. I ordered Tomato Soup and it looked like greasy water. My main course was a pizza & garlic bread when they arrived the pizza was wrong and they took it away leaving my with the garlic bread. It took them 15-25 minutes to return with another pizza. I had been so pissed off I ate half and left the rest. This is the best bit when our bill came they expected me to pay the full price. I had a word with the Manager (who I think was a poofter) and he was very rude. In the end I got the food for nothing.
