This place is fantastic. I had pre-booked by phone, as I was told it could get busy, and was glad I did. Although a way out on the Zante Town road, it's worth the walk. A lovely welcoming atmosphere, and the food was incredible. Try the mixed starters for 2, a selection of 12 different starters from squid rings to Village sausage and fried aubergines that all four of us tucked into. The moussaka was enormous, but very light and fluffy, the beef in herbs with pasta comes in its own individual dish and was very tasty. Unusually, the desserts were varied, we chose banana ice cream, chocolate cake, creme caramel and yogurt with honey and nuts(delicious). Service was prompt and reasonably friendly - they give special attention if its a birthday or special occasion. Prices seemed cheaper than elsewhere too, so we tended to eat more!! Another nice touch was that we were not automatically brought out a plate of bread, for which we would be charged, but instead were offered a choice; we opted for garlic bread which was good value. If you're staying in Kalamaki, you must go to Michaelo's. If, like us, you stay in Laganas, it is well worth the drive.

David G

Excellent food and really cheap! What more can you want? The walk may put people off but dont be. There is a really nice road just near DIAS that brings you out next to Mikaelos, that goes past a lovely church. You will not be disappointed.

Michael R

Thanks again Dennis for excellant food and attentive staff. Probably see you again next year but certainly not with JMC.

Phil, C

Lovely traditional Greek restaurant with friendly staff (apart from one who must have been trained by Basil Fawlty). Good choice of food although the Lamb Kleftiko was a little salty. Good value for money.

Peter M

We ate at Mikaelos twice on this holiday as we had done previously four years ago, Dennis and is staff are great. The food we ordered was spot on and enjoyable in particular the chicken special I had on one occasion. I would recommend anyone to eat here and you will not be disappointed because it's 10/10 rating is justified.

Steve H

WE have been to Mikaelos several times last year & were amazed by the high standard of food each time, paticularly the kleftico stiffado & a chicken special i tried once, even the kids loved it . We have been to zante again this year but stayed in alykannas we were so much looking forward to eating in mikaelos we got a taxi there & back 40 euros worth!! It was worth every cent!!!!Dennis remembered us & we had a lovely welcome, the prices of the food were unbelivable almost half the price than resteraunts in alykannas & twice as nice! Good luck to Dennis & all the staff see you next year when we will be staying in Kalamaki, Steve & Janet Hughes N.Wales

Jane E

Excellent all round. Not to be missed!! and what a welcome. Well worth the walk

Kelly W

MIKAELOS was the best restaurant that i have been to in all of kalamaki, especially the quick service I would definately recommend this place to anyone who enjoys greek food. Although a short walk it is well worth it. A big thankyou to albert for his excellent service. Don't miss out on this small friendly family run restaurant.

Nicky D

Didn't find this restaurant until the second week, a couple of friends that we had met took us there. This place is definately the best restaurant on the island. The food was outstanding and the service was great. A definate place to visit if you go to Kalamaki.

Gary C

We ate here every other night ,as we found the food, service and V.F.M. excellent. The kids loved it due to the fact that they could have more or less anything on the menu in a childs portion rather than the normal kids Fayre you get.

Sarah C

We only ate here once but the meal we had was lovely! Good atmosphere and friendly waiters, the only downside was that they didn't really cater for kids(no chicken nuggets or sausages!!)Wish we had found this place at the start of our holiday.

Anne A

One of our favourite restaurants by far! We were lucky enough to get a table straight away because EVERY table was taken both times we went there. We tried lamb kapama which was a huge leg of lamb in a tomato sauce ( quite nice ),chicken souvlaki which was tasty but the best by far was the beef stifado. Tender chunks of beef stewed in a delicious sauce served with roast spuds and veggies, I'm salivating just typing this! Instead of ordering normal bread, order garlic bread instead as it's so tasty and I noticed that most people ordered it. Prices were very good too!

Julie P

We rated this place as the best eaterie on the island, Dennis runs it and is so friendly, he makes you feel like family! We have eaten here every time we have visited Zante in the past 3 years, and have never been disappointed. The beef stifado, lamb Kleftiko & fillet steak is excellant and good value, gorgeous setting amongst the olive groves.. can't wait to return in September!

Gary E

Even before you've sat down you'll enjoy this place. The welcome you receive from the owner is second to none and the same can be said about the food.Go there and enjoy.

Darren P

After reading the reviews on here, expectations were high but possibly not reached. I didn't particularly enjoy my main meal but that was probably down to the choice I made more than anything else. My wife's dish included a very large boiled potato which was curiously peeled but left whole! The guys who works in the backroom doing the drinks spotted our year old son and came and took him away! He's got a very young son of his own and was clearly still in that mushy phase! Nice surroundings, good service, nice food. Just not as nice as I'd hoped.

Sharon H

A lovely greek restaurant, its abit out of the way but well worth the walk. Very freindly staff, the food was lovely, clean plates all round we even had pudding. Good prices.

Glynne W

We tried Mikaelos because of its 10/10 rating. we found it very over rated and the only meal I could not eat in the whole 2 weeks ( I have been going to Greece for 15 years and normally like Greek food) The only plus was the way the waiters were dressed which was not the most important issue

Mikaela H

I lurve Mikaelos and Dennis the manager is a gem who remembers your face forever, we had supreme service and amazing food, the atmosphere is great but it gets very busy peak season so eat early or late!! Dennis (sakis) if you remember me Mikaela then i love you guys and we will be back to see you all very soon, i came with my parents in 95 and then lived and worked in Zante in 98, and i would go back and back and back and rate it as one of my all time favourite restaurants and i recommend it to everyone, i was even going to get married there!!!

Karen R

We visited Mikaelos twice over our two week stay. The first was very enjoyable, the food being excellent. However, when we returned, it was very busy and the waiters rushed us into finishing our meal in order to free the table. We were rushed so much so that the waiter who seemed to be the Head Waiter, started to lay the cutlery for the next diners before we had even ordered dessert!!

Dave G

Having been a regular visitor to the island, there is only one place that you will get Mousaka as it should be prepared, and that is at Mikaelos. That along with the House Red, is the best way to enjoy it.

Debbie H

We were in Zante for one week and went to Mikaelos on our third night on recommendation, and we never went anywhere else after that. Dennis is absolutely fantastic and the rest of the staff are excellent and friendly, the service was excellent and we never had to wait long for a table. The food was excellent the Mousakka and the mixed Metze platter for two was fantastic, but the Lanb Kleftico was out of this world,I would definatley recommend this reastaurant to anywone going to Zante.

Paul D

This was the best restaurant we ate at. Its a bit of a walk but well worth it.The food was excellent. I would recommend the Moussaka, steak &Zakinthyan Beef. For starters the cheese pie was the best and the soup was gorgeous, it was homemade and really tasty. The tomato soup was packed with fresh tomatoes. Dennis,Albert and the rest of the staff were really friendly and entertained our six year old well. In fact Albert even came to visit us at our hotel before we went home. This has a wonderful atmosphere and was very traditional. It was busy everynight but there was a lovely little bar area at the side where you could wait for your table.Dennis does not let anybody get passed without saying goodbye and thankyou and the ladies all get a kiss. A truly great restaurant, you'd be a fool to miss it.

Sue B

Wonderful food - the prawns in tomato sauce with garlic bread were a knock out. Moussaka to die for, Lamb Klefitko - a dream. We visited a total of three times and only regret not going all seven nights of our holiday so that we could work through the menu!!!. Suggest you book (0695)48.080) in high season or else you will never get a table. Thank you Michaelos for truly memorable food.

Tommy G

we have just got back from Zante we stayed at Kalamaki for two weeks gr8 place will go again.we went to Mikaelos and we where not impressed it was over priced and the service was poor--we had to wait for ove 25 mins just to pay our bill!!!! god knows what it is like in july????

Lindsey R

Defintely the best restaurant we went to on our stay, and we went back a few times. Excellent food and great value for money. Really nice atmosphere and do a great loster - but must order in advance.

Andy B

The best restaurant we visited during our two weeks in Kalamaki - both in terms of quality food and value for money - we went there three times. There's a little bar next door which acts as a holding bar for the restaurant - go in and say hello to Michael before visiting Dennis and his gang in the restaurant - have the mezze for two to start with (between two of you of course) it was excellent.

Linda Y

sounds great, my partner is veggi, what sort of choice is there and can anyone suggest other places for veggies to eat?

Rob S

Michaelos Taverna is the best. We love the food, the atmosphere, the staff and best of all the owner Dennis who makes every meal memorable. We keep going back and will be there again soon.

Lesley B

dennis my friend, five years we have been coming, and cant wait untill june, lovely place, lovely people and the moussaka is great too. just love the chocolate mousse. see you soon.

Adele K

Yasoo Dennis! I am a regular visitor of Kalamaki and I must say this is my favourite restaurant. Great menu and welcoming staff! Typically Greek.

Moira C

will be visiting Kalamaki in September , looking forward to it! Wilf & Moira

Dawn D

Tried Mikaelos due to recommendations on this web site. Denis was friendly and the waiters were okay. The food was average and was served as soon as we sat down which we thought was a bit too quick. All in all an okay restaurant but have had better at the Pandesia.

Grace H

This is apparently the oldest restaurant on the island and it never fails to deliver. The food is superb - great if you want to sample traditional Greek cuisine. We made a couple of visits and also visited last year. We shall return. Highly recommended.

Peter T

After 10 YEARS holidaying in Kalamaki,Mikaelos is still one of our top 2 traditional Greek restaurants. The starter, PLATTER FOR TWO, is a must,as is Mammas GARLIC BREAD,and Denis's hand crafted MOUSSAKA.BUT never together unless you have a huge huge appetite!!The food the service, and the ambiance is first class if you want a truly Greek night out.Try the house red.

Chris F

A friendly relaxed atmosphere and a very warm welcome from Denis and his staff. We made five visits during our 14 night stay and we were never dissapointed, all dishes were superb especially the lamb. We shall most definatly return.

Doug B

We saw the information about this restaurant on your website before we went to Kalamaki. It was superb and fully deserved your 10/10 rating. We were only there for a week but visited twice. Denis is an extremely affable host, and by comparison with other places, the menu was not expensive and the food was delicious. If you go to Kalamaki make sure you pay it a visit.

Tim B

Without a doubt, one of the best places to eat in Kalamaki. Good service and excellent food. Always busy - must be a good sign

John T

Went twice - well fed - both quality and quantity. Recommend any lamb dish - it simply melts in your mouth. Kids loved watching the lizards on the wall.

Margaret M

Superb food, service and price. We went 11 times during our 14 night stay in Kalamaki. Denis even took us in his own car to a Greek night at a nearby hotel when the taxi drivers went on strike for a day. Typical price for a 3 course meal with wine for 2 adults and one child £20. Never had a bad meal and tried most things but ran out of holiday. We will definitely return.

Mark

We were lucky to have one of the best resturants close to our apartment. We tried other resturants but found this to be a cut above the rest because of the good service, food and cost. Mark and Dee.

Avtar S

The best at Kalamaki,so good we went back for a second time.Beats other restraunts, hands down.Friendly & efficient staff.Highly recommend .

Richard A

Excellent meal, one of the best during our stay.

Mary S

Had read about this resturant on this site before going to Zante on the 12th August(had a wonderful time exept for the experiences at the airport).Luckily it was a five minute walk from our Hotel. It was by far the best ever, sevice, food and atmosphere. After visiting other resorts we returned to Mikaelos as we could be guaranteed a wonderful meal.Try the fish-silver bream and perch, wonderful, wish there was a Mikaelos everywhere.

Odette S

Absolutely the best food and huge portions! Most friendly smiling service we did not meet in other restaurangs (except Break Point Bar). Beautiful taverna, you won't disappoint!

Mark R

Food/service excellent, even my 5 yr old ate all his dinner!!

Ekke K

Todella lämminhenkinen ja kodikas ruokapaikka. Erinomainen ruoka. Suosittelen alkupalalistalta usean eri ruokalajin tilaamista (mese...)

Sandra P

Well worth the taxi fare, which was only about £3 each way from Leganas. Went twice, food & service excellent and very good value. We had to wait in the bar both times, but even the prices in the bar were cheap.

Lynne A

Our meals at Mikaelos were absolutely gorgeous. The staff were very friendly and kind, and the food tasted out of this world but yet at a very reasonable price! Its setting is lovely and certainly impressed my husband and I, so much so - we went back again!

Steve H

The best service in Kalamaki, great meal, great price, great restaurant!!!! Harborne and Walker Family

Simon A

Dear Samantha- I am Simons partner Linda. Yes he does complain a lot- at least you don't have to live with him! However if you look at Stanis and Dias he does have pleasant things to say! Myself, I loved Mikaelos, had no complaints about the Daniel, and thought the Cave Bar was wonderful.

Sarah P

10/10! The staff were so friendly and really looked like they enjoyed what they were doing! The food was excellent & the atmosphere was great! We went back about 6 times during our two week holiday, if you are going to Kalamaki you just have to go! It also looks like it might be a bit more pricy than some other places but it was very reasonable! Beats fish & chips any day!

Tim A

Well worth a visit. Once you have been here you will not want to go any where else. Excellent value for money. If you are staying in Kiki Apartments you are right nextdoor - make sure you get there before 8pm as it is a very popular place.

Samantha M

This resturant is superb! I have just two favourite resturants in Kalamaki and this is one of them. The food was great and had some great traditional greek specialities. Simon - I am so pleased that you actually found one nice thing about your holiday and that you didn't complain about anything! Is that a first for you?

Flip F

the best. best price. best food. no more 2 b said.

Sally M

The best restaurant on the island. Puts mermaids to shame, which was full of kids. You have to try Mamas special-beautiful!! Very friendly waiters. Dennis will always come and see you no matter how busy. Best time to go is before 8pm as it gets busy.Located about a 15 min walk from Athina Apartments.

Dale D

Excellent all round, food spot on - try Mama's specials - excellent, House wine very good, waiters brilliant - be there before 8.00pm for a table, Mythos (Greek beer) very good, and the Chocolate cake - best restaurant in Kalamki!

Topper B

A little too crowded for our liking but nevertheless very good!!

Keith B

This is a top notch Greek Restaurant, a cut above the ubiquitous Taverna tag, but with the same prices. Truly excellent food. About 500 yds along the Zakynthos road from 'the T junction' in Kalamaki. Well worth a visit. Gets busy, you might have to wait a while in their bar consuming large cocktails @£1.50 a go until you're called.

Julie W

excellent food and service is tops. brilliant grilled chicken meal for the less adventurous. and the best beef stroganoff i've ever tasted - "Mamas special recipe"

Elaine M

Service and food were excellent - plenty of choice. The waiters treat everyone very nicely. Dennis told us he helps in the kitchen in the morning with food preparation and Mamma is there as well. Ladies if you want a night out speak to Domitrios one of the waiters - very cute - give him my kind regards.

Rick H

we come back to kalamaki for one reason...mikaelos. the service is fantastic and the food is second to none. when you pay £3 for a bottle of wine that costs £12 back home, then you know its reasonably priced as well. mermaids is good for breakfasts but the reason i and many others go to greece is to sample the culture and the food;there's not much on mermaid's menu that i can't eat back home !!!

Sam C

Best meal we had all holiday & great value for money highly recommend it.

Mal W

Food blissful and those waiters !!!! You must check it out!

Jamie W

Wow! We can't recommend Mikaelo's more highly. The food is wonderful, the service so friendly and they are all extremely attentive. The prices are comparative to everywhere else in town - very reasonable. The greeting that you get whether in the restaurant or in the bar next door is wonderful. Don't miss it! Jenny Worrall

S S

We went here last year - recommended to try it by friends. However, with 2 children we found it disappointing as there was nothing for them other than small portions off the main menu. If we were on our own we would have gone back, but not with the kids.

Simon A

What a joy to find that this the best taverna on the island was by good fortune the nearest to our hotel(The Daniel). In common with the other Daniel guests we felt we should neglect Mikaelos and in the spirit of adventure eat further afield. And in common with all the other Daniel guests after eating here and there in average to poor places we returned to the excellent Mikaelos. Fresh Halibut on my birthday, also our last night, was wonderful. As a big fish eater I also recommend the fillet of Perch. How this website claims that the OK but average Mermaids is the best restaurant in Kalamaki and puts Mikaelos second is a mystery.

Scott L

went to mikaelos in 1990 and 1999. dennis and the resturant have not changed in ten years, still serving excellent food and great hospiltality. have visited many other greek islands in between these years and mikaelos is still the best.

Sarah W

My husband and I are visually impaired and have been to Kalamaki several times, each time with different friends/family and have always made Mikaelos our first stop for our first evening meal. The service is superb, the food is out of this world and we can recommend the red wine called Ruby. If you go to Kalamaki this restaurant is a MUST!

Natalie H

There is a sign at one of the road junctions which reads "Mikaelos, best resturant on the island - ask anyone!" How true that is! Dennis always greets each customer individually and is very proud that his mother does the cooking. Dennis and all his staff are smart, friendly, proffesional and have great English (although we should all make the effort to speak their lingo). Also, the locals eat there on a regular basis - always a good sign!

Matt U

My favorite resturant on the island. Try walking here from cave bar just after dusk it's a beautiful evening out.

Ann R

SPEND 2 WEEKS IN KALAMAKI LAST MAY (2000) AND SPENT 10 NIGHTS DINING AT MIKAELOS. EXCELLANT FOOD & SERVICE. DENNIS WILL TREAT YOU AS A SPECIAL GUEST NO MATTER HOW BUSY. TRY SPEAKING GREEK AND HE LOVES IT. TRY MAMAS GARLIC BREAD ....YUM,YUM

Natasha K

WE LOVED MIKAELOS - DENNIS WILL GREET YOU AND WILL ALWAYS TELL YOU THE BEST THING ON THE MENU FOR THAT EVENING - TRY THE ZAKYNTHIAN SPECIALITY OF STEWED RABBIT - IT IS WONDERFUL. AS THE RESTAURANT IS ABOUT 10MINS FROM THE CENTRE OF KALAMAKI I SUGGEST YOU SET OFF EARLY (AS THE ROADS ARE A BIT HAIRY) ALSO IT GETS PACKED!!! YUM YUM

Barry C

This is by far the best restaurant on the island. The service you receive is second to none. The restaurant gets busy quick so go early. When you get there you will be greeted by Dennis and he makes you feel so welcome. Try it when you go as it would be ashame not to.

Diana B

On the road to Zakinthos town and away from the rest of the retaurants, but well worth the walk, (or taxi ride). Most certainly the best eating place in Kalamki. At least it was during Sept 2000.
