Jet

i have just came back from kalamaki and only seen the caretta bay hotel while out for a walk but it looked beautiful.

pool area was all i seen but if the rest of the hotel is on a par you will love it.

Sarah R

Hi Grace, I am heading to Caretta Bay in August and would appreciate your opinions on the place when you get back:) Ive been finding it hard to find any reviews on the place so I have no idea what to expect! I went to Zante last year in June for a week but we stayed in Laganas. Hope you have a great holiday:)

Lisa

Kirsty, I am off in June and can't wait, we are staying at Sirene tho ever been?? I know quite a few people who have been to Kalamaki before and they agree the airport is a nightmare, it should be better for next year tho as there is a new terminal getting built! Hopefully we wont have to wait as long as you. Do you mean one carousel for the full airport??

Grace C

Hi all, I am going to stay at the Caretta Bay for a week 12th June and I will give a full account of it when I get back! Really looking forward to it. As long as the apartment is clean and comfortable I will be happy - after all, it's just a place to crash. I definitely won't be sticking to the resort; we wanna see every inch of the island. I have been told that a day trip to Kefalonia is "a must", and also the tour to Athens is supposed to be unmissable. Can't wait; roll on the next two weeks...

Kirsty D

Just back from an excellent two week break in Kalamaki. Wow! it was great. stayed at the Hotel Dennys Inn, very basic accomodation, but was very clean, tidy and friendly and had a pool. Kalamaki is a fab resort suitable for all ages, it as plenty of restraunts, shops and bars and a club/ bar called Plus Soda which is great. Laganas is a 20 min walk away or five min in taxi only six euros, and as loads of bars/ shops and clubs!

Only problem is the airport! complete nightmare. only one luggage carrosol and seven flights landing at once had to wait at least an hour for bags. leaving is just as bad, took three hours to check in. Apart from the nightmare their zante is a gorgeous island for all ages.

Hope this review helps!

Stephanie

Amy1 goin 2 Kalamaki between 16th - 30th of June????

Ian B

am thinking of going to zante for a week in october would like some help in recommended places to stay and how busy the island is at that time of year.

Diane B

Thank you so much for the advice.  I feel much happier and am now even more excited about going there at the end of June.

Stephanie

Diane you could also do the same - Go to the justzante homepage and at the bottom click Apartments and Kalamaki and scrol down until you get to Denis I and II that also holds info on the apartments, and it might have pictures!

Lisa

Stephanie

Hi Jenna, when you go to the justzante home page go down to the bottom and select Kalamaki and Apartments and then scrol down until it takes you to Dionysis Apartments and it gives reviews on them, they look quite nice and there is also 4 pictures if you click on the picture part at the top of the page! hope it helps!

Hi

Lucy - my boyfriend and I stayed at the Venus in 2003 and loved it. It's basic but very clean and the pool area is lovely. It's also close to loads of lovely restaurants and bars and about a 5-10 minute walk to the beach.
Jenna - I believe the dionysys apartments are just up the road from the Venus and very close to the bars and restaurants. It would be about a 10 minute walk from the beach.
Kalamaki is great, you'll have a really good time! We are flying out again on the 5th July for a fortnight, we liked it that much!
Hope that helps,
Kelly

Diane B

I would like to know if anyone has stayed at the Denis I apartments in Kalamaki, we're going in 4 weeks and it's the first time we've been to Greece.

Diane B

We're going to Kalamaki in 4 weeks and staying at Denis I apartments, does anyone know what it's like there?

Jenna P

I'm going to kalamaki in July and i'm staying at the Dionysis Apartments and i cant seem to find any info on the apartments. I am really worried that there going to be in the middle of no where with nothing around can anybody enlighten me?

Hi Sue,

Thank Again,
Stephanie

Sue R

Hi Stephanie, myself & my husband, John have just come back from staying at the Sirene appartments.

We were in a studio which was extremely basic and small (more than 2 beds in the room would be difficult) The fridge was good but you couldn't cook any gourmet meals on the table top 2 ring cooker. There was no kettle but a small pan to boil water. The balcony was supposed to overlook the pool but you couldn't see out as there were overgrown plants/trees blocking the view (I suppose it made it more private!)

To be fair, it's the first time we've been to Greece and everyone has said the standards are always far lower than places like Spain & Portugal etc.
Although basic, the place was clean and the staff friendly. The bar and restaurant were very good and the pool and sunbed areas were also good.
It's quite along way out of the main street in Kalimaki (a good 15 min walk along the road without pavements) a taxi ride cost 5 euros so we did quite abit of walking!)

I wouldn't stay in the Sirene again but it didn't spoil our hols and you generally do get what you pay for.

Have a great time, check out the Down Under bar the staff are brilliant!

Cheers
Sue

Add your comment here..stephanie go onto a site called holidays uncovered and you can read all about your hotel from people that have stayed there .

Stephanie

Hey There!

Am off to Kalamaki in about 5 weeks!! Can't wait!! But were hearing very mixed opinions on The Sirene Apartments! If anyone has any info??
Thank You
xx

Roz D

Derik Y could you tell me what the 2 Brothers resort is like?! I'm going to stay there on the 19th June and would be good to know what to expect! I can't wait!!!

Mandy F

Could anyone tell me what the Caretta BAY hotel is like in Kalamaki? It is a sister hotel of Carretta Beach. I will be going to stay there in August but can not find any information about it.

Melanie T

Hi June Slingsby, Yes...i can give you some info on Bitzaro Palace!....It's wonderful!!!! We stayed there for 2 weeks in 2002 and go back for 2 weeks next week!! The hotel is situated in a perfect location...5 min walk to beach, shops, restaurants etc. The hotel is VERY friendly, clean...food is excellent, pool is the best...the place to relax! Kalamaki is not very hilly. The main "strip" is very flat, there are some hills by the beach, but it depends where you go. Try it out...guarantee you'll love it!!!!!

Derek Y

Going back to Kalamaki on 8th May 2006 for two weeks. Staying at Two Brothers, good position in Resort 5 minutes from bars anbd restaurants, 15mins from beach. Stayed nr there 2 years ago, aircraft noise not to bad most of the time.

Beach marveloous and there are points further way from Centre where u can get an @all over' tan .
I hope all who are going this summer enjoy it!!
Cheers
Derek

Ian M

Hi Claire Newbury

My wife and I were in Kalamaki in May 2003 and found it to be a really nice resort for a like minded couple like yourself. (we are in our 30's and enjoy child free peacefull places were we can enjoy our own company and not those imposed on you by 'others') We only visited Laganas by the day which was enough for us. Kalamiki is about a 20 min+ walk away. During the day this a pleasant walk along the beach, but by night I don't know the best route. I would say though that Laganas is a big resort and spreads out more so you may find nicer places to frequent on the fringes. Hope this helps you.

Carolann H

Travelled with Kosmar before..brilliant company. Booked for next July(06) staying in Dias Apartments in Kalamaki. What is there to do with a daughter aged 17 and a son aged 14? Has Zante airport improved? Sounds a bit dodgy after reading some reviews

Julie M

Anyone travellig to kalamaki at the beginning of Aug and staying at hotel exotica

Ian M

Hi June

We stayed at the Golden Sun in 2003 and found it to be very good. The rooms are basic but clean and the breakfast was okay-ish, but that seems to be the way all over. My wife and I are in our thirties and we thought the pool area was excellent as it was very peacefull. It was smart and clean with plenty of sunbeds, tables and umbrella-ay things (this was in early May though so was very quite) It is about a 10 min walk to the main tavernas, makes for a nice stroll back after a nights over indulgence. Yes the planes fly very low over the hotel as mentioned by lots of other people which concerned us prior to going, but rest assured, they are a novelty. At first you think blimey that was low, but by the second day you don't even notice them. They don't fly at night for the turtles so weren't really an issue to us. There is a fantastic beach about 200 yards away. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here.

Alasdair C

hi im travelling to kalamaki on 8th may whats it like for a single 37 male who lives life to the full .can anyone please give me some idea how good the two brothers apartments, as this is where im staying is it effected by aircraft noise and how close to bars and tavernas bring on the sun regards alasdair collins

Julie I

Hey June, you will definitely like Kalamaki! Haven't stayed in either of the accomodations you have mentioned but you can check out customer comments on this site under Hotels and Apartments in Kalamaki! But Kalamaki itself is a nice laid back spread out resort! It is very flat unlike Argassi which is very hilly! Lots of great tavernas, bars and restaurants, some of the best on the island in fact! You can always find a quiet spot to enjoy the wonderful greek atmosphere! It is very near the end of the runway, so can be quite busy with aircraft on certain days! But it is quite fun plane spotting!!! The beach is one of Kalamakis best features! It is very pale fine sand and it stretches right round the bay to Laganas! You can always find a spot there!! Walk out for quite a way into the sea before it gets deep! Lots of quiet country lanes if you like a leisurley stroll of an evening, but very hot in the summer months so best to find a nice cool spot with a nice drink and a good book methinks!

Lots of olive groves and it is quite rural.....bliss really!! You will love it there I am sure! Also for more info and a nice chat about Zante and Kalamaki you could always find www.zante.me.uk and join me and everyone else who loves ZANTE!!!

Add your comment here.. We are thinking of staying in Kalamaki. Any comments about GOLDEN SUN HOTEL or BITZARO PALACE? Also is Kalamaki a very hilly place? I saw details of BIZARO PALACE in several brochures but only ONE mentioned 'steep hills'. We are middle aged, looking for mainly beach, shops, eating, and a peaceful rest! THANKS.

Julie M

Thanks for all your comments, they were really useful. Looking forward to our hols in August.

Jeanette H

Hey, Julie - we have been to the Hotel Exotica twice already and we are going back on 15th August this year.  My daughters are 13 and 10 and we really love it there.  There is a daytime entertainments programme which is very good and keeps the kids (and adults!) entertained until about 5pm and there is evening entertainment about 5 nights a week.  The Thomson organised entertainment is very good (i.e. quiz night, Reps show, kids club shows etc) but some of the other entertainment is not worth staying in for.  There is plenty of entertainment out and about in the bars and some nights at the Exotica there would be just 3 or 4 families back for the evening.  So I would try and mix it a bit, there is no pressure to stay at the Exotica unless the kids want to go to the kiddie disco which starts at 9pm (thankfully mine have outgrown that now - after 7 years of dancing to "Thomson the Dog" - we are ready for something a bit more lively!!)

I am sure you will have a great time though - the hotel itself is fabulous; the facilities are brilliant and the staff are Great!

I visited Argassi last year with a few of my friends but spent EVERY day on Kalamaki Beach, the sea is shallow, warm and calm. We stumbled on the nudist section on the far left of the beach, as you enter the beach by the crystal beach hotel you turn left and keep going for about 150metres.  We plucked up courage on the second day and spent every day after that on the beach getting an all over tan. There were four of us and none of us felt intimidated at all a couple of the girls were normally shy too. The fruit seller guy also visits the area quite regular so you can always get refreshed with fruit or doughnuts. I have booked up to go this august and will be taking my boyfriend this year. We will defiantly be getting the ALL-OVER –TAN again this year on my regular spot. Try it you'll like it!!!

Julie I

Hey Julie,

We have been to Zante 4 times already and will be returning this August! If you need to know more about the Exotica read Jeanette Hindles previous comments on this page! She always stays at The Exotica! As for "Things to Do" there are a multitude of things!!
 1) Round Island Boat Trip...nice day out,(can be a bit choppy), see Smugglers, stop off at Beaches
only reachable by boat!
2)Zakfari Jeep Safari...Brill round island land trip in off road vehicles! See customer comments on
this site! Quite expensive but worth it. Swimming stop, Smugglers wreck from
above...you know THE MOST common pic of the wreck. Lunch stop and back to resort!
3)Water Park.....This is new since my laast visit so cannot comment..will be trying it myself this visit!
4)Turtle spotting....Go out in boats for a cruise whilst hunting for Turtles!
Still some things I haven't done myself...sure you will find something that suits your family!
As for the evenings...you can do whatever. Think the Exotica has some good entertainment programmes so you may decide to stop there for your entire holiday. But personally I like to go out of an evening, trying out all the good quality restaurants and Tavernas which you can find especially in Kalamaki. Michaelos is good, and Mermaids and Paulos Ive been told though not tried it myself! Mindst you we are self catering so have to really. Something for everyone I'd say!! Cave bar for great cocktails and views...Daisy's does a great greek night, you will be able to find somewhere you like I am Positive! Great beach for sunbathing and swimming, can walk out miles before if gets deep, bur best go to Argassi for watersports,eg jet-skis, parascending, banana boats etc!
Don't know when you are travelling but it is very hot in the summer months, nights included so be prepared for that. Also take something to repel the mozzies, especially in rooms and out at nite! Zante is a great place, and we go as a family 5 kids 4 adults and we all love it so!(2 families) And our kidz range from 15 down to 10 and they love it! Be warned the Airport is a bit of a disaster but it is only a tiny part of the holiday and we have been 5 times this year and it hasn't put us off at all!
Have a great holiday...sure you will and come and join us all in Zanteme forum, where you can post questions and we will try and answer them as honestly as we can!

     JOOLZ

P.S not to put you off at all Greece is an earthquake zone and we experienced one in 2003...but it wasn't that bad just a bit of rumbling and shaking and we are still going back anyway.  Like I said been on 4 visits and this was our 1st tremor!! Quite exciting really, but it wasn't a major one....5.4 on the richter I think!!!!!

going to Kalamaki to Hotel Exotica for the first time on 1st August 2005. We have 2 kids 8 & 13 yrs old any body have any advice on where to go?  (e.g. trips to go on)
do most families spend evenings in the hotel or out in the town???

Brian A

i went to kalamaki for the first time about 10 yrs ago. i go about 3 times a  year in 2003 i went with penny on may 1 and came home oct 20 some holiday .i can say that you will find no better place than kale .to go through the place for a holiday from a view of a person who has been just for two weeks at a time  who tend to get stuck in the same places and a person who has spent longer at one time and cant just treat it as aholiday some places i would reccommend.    breakfasts   english   lighthouse [dereck and veronica] point break  both good filling break fasts.  for your main everning meal if you are not at all adventoures   try  mermaids big meal very english  for a greeck meal try mickeloes10 out of 10 but for a real treat try petrinos fish disheers are somthing to die for and his klefttiko in filo is just unbeatable.  another very good place to eat is sugar reef  [dennis the king of cocktails and all his clan ]  even if you dont eat  at reef go back and have a cocktail to end the night .for your one or two drinks befour or after ameal try the cave bar as a starter then as you move back down the hill turn left and you will find mustang across the road yoou will fid al asandros then move further down the road oppisite cava-dora you will find the savoy do not be put of by first apperances this is the bar this is mr kalamaki himself this is lambros once a friend always afriend people who have not been to kaki for years stiil tak of lambro as a true friend and greeck gentleman  if you want to end the night with noise try down under if you want romance have a last cocktail in sugar reef just leave it to dennis

Hi Lesley, we have been to Kalamaki and the Hotel Exotica twice before in 2002 and 2004 and we are going back in August this year.

The hotel is fantastic, the staff are all very friendly and helpful and the Thomson team were superb.  The kids club was brilliant and although my eldest is too old to attend this year there is always plenty going on around the pool to keep her busy.  The pool area is very nice and clean and there are plenty of sun loungers if you just want to chill out and relax.  The poolside bar serves some lovely meals and is very reasonably priced.  The hotel itself has a football/rounders pitch, volleyball net, table tennis, kids playground, pool table and giant chess set.  There are organised games throught the day evening entertainment some evenings.

The rooms all have fridges, but you do have to pay to have them unlocked.  I think it was about 30 euros for 2 weeks last year.  They also have aircon also at a cost.  On our last two visits the rooms had ceiling fans so we did not use the aircon, but I believe the fans have been removed so it will probably be necessary this year.  You can hire hairdryers, kettles and irons for a small refundable deposit and also towels are available to hire for a small deposit.

I have never seen any cockroaches - the hotel is very clean and a small plug in mozzie repellent should suffice.

We have had two fantastic holidays at the Exotica and we are looking forward to going back in August. Only 145 more sleeps
I am sure you will have a brilliant time.

i am going to kalamaki for the first time on june 20th so i need some information please ! firstly has anyone any info on hotel exotica with regards to fridges  some people say they are in your room and you have to pay to have them unlocked some say that you have to get them on a first come first served basis i did have a letter from thomson regarding the kettles irons and hairdryers saying that these are on a first come basis they are free but you have to leave a deposit. Secondly i would like some advice as to what to take with me in regards to the mozzis (eg the best plug in repellents etc) any advice as to how to take money over there eg cash travellers cheque etc and lastly is it true that there are giant cockroaches in your rooms as me and my kids are seriously arachnophobic and i dont fancy coming face to face with one of those! looking forward to going as ive been reading all the comments and it sounds like a really lovely place and its my first holiday abroad  since before i had my 6 kids 19 years ago.

Julie I

This is to Con...WELL SAID!!! Greece and her islands are one of my most fave places ever! Zakynthos is a beautiful island with some of THE nicest people!!! I have been to Kalamaki once and Argassi three times and am returning to Kalamaki this summer...and I cannot wait!! To everybody on Zakynthos be very proud of your island because it is a little gem, and to all of you visitors now and in the future, look after this island, and respect its people and culture and most of all...ENJOY!!!!

Hello to all the great people putting up your great comments and helpful info about kalamaki and zante in general.Firstly, to all the people on the kalamaki zante message board keep up the great work. You have helped kalamaki in a big way and its good to have people writting all about our wonderful resort ,taking the time out to help others coming to our island.Chris as for you ,well what can i say that many people have not already said ,i know you personally and i can honestly say you are what you are a down to earth good guy with the best manners and personality i have had the honour of meeting. As for the false amy girl and many other idiots that have tried to ruin this great website the time has come to stamp you all out of this site and crack down harder to make this site what it is information from good honest customers and friends that love our island.I know who this amy is chris and will sort it personaly as if anyone is jealous or has a problem with our resort or shops etc they know where i am and i can give them all the answers so i call out to all the false amy characters out bugger off somewhere else to say it in nice words.Keep it up mate and all of you wonderful people on the boards.

Jeanette H

TO "AMY" or whatever your real name is - Plus Soda may not be the only club in Kalamaki but it is certainly one of THE BEST!!!!

Chris Chadwick is a very knowledgeable guy who freely shares his vast experience of Kalamaki with many grateful people.

As for his "false advertising" - it would only be false if what he was saying was not true. He is not the only person to think that Plus Soda is a fantastic club - take a look at the reviews!

Chris C

well, `Amy`, you put some hints up for people visiting then.

PS is your name Amy, I clicked on your other comments...

very sorry for trying to be a help to people coming to the beautiful island.

Debbie W

Amy W

Just thought i'd add that Chris Chadwick should stop false advertising.. Plus Soda is not the only club in Kalamaki...There are many others...

John D

Fantastic !!
You will enjoy this resort, people are so friendly, food loads of choice. The turtles are big !!
Clean beaches. Check out the fruit salad man, fresh chilled fruit and filled rolls cheap as chips !!!
If u like 2 relax or party hard there is so much choice in the evening.Stayed at the Cavo d oro last year, chilled in the bar, try Mythos the local beer its great. They so friendly.Transfer time from airport approx 10 mins. Thanks John

Linda M

I have booked for Dionysis in July. Read some of the reports but can any one please give me any further info ie: what are the rooms like, especially the showers (don't want the room to end up flooded). Don't mind basic cos don't spend much time in the room anyway! Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Chris C

Loads to do Nancy, you`ll love it...check out the reviews (and the Plus Soda ones, Kalamaki`s only club!)

Chris C

Holiday Tips for this year!Chris Chadwick January 2005(1) Zante airport

is very small and gets hot in summer. Take your own food and drinks for the return flight as the prices are extortionate. The duty free shop is often cheaper than the shops though!

(2) Bars and clubs.

The newest and best bar/club in the resort is Plus Soda, next to Mermaids, with entertainment for all the family, live DJs, fully airconditioned, plasma screens etc.
There are plenty of bars according to the mood, whether you want a quiet drink or a bit more liveliness!
I like the Cave Bar fror a quiet drink, ideal for couples, and always pay a visit to Akis and Alison at the Cavo d`Oro Hotel bar (not the pool bar but the one on the front) - say Chris sent you, great for a relaxing night!
There is a lot of difference in prices, Plus Soda will be amongst the cheapest as well, I`ve been charged 4.50 euros for a pint of Fosters in one bar! (never went back)

(3) restaurants

without doubt my personal favourite is Mermaids where I eat every night. HUGE range of dishes and all the family`s catered for, internet access and playstations etc for the kids! It`s the busiest in Kalamaki and all the food is fresh and the meat all imported.
All your tastes are catered for in the resort, if you want a meal `out of the way` there are quiet tavernas also.
Again, a good guide is to see which places are busy and which aren`t as people often return to their favourites!

(4) Money

The rate in kalamaki is always better than in England, take cash, store it in a safety box and change over there. Sofias shop normally has the best rate. Watch out for high exchange rates where they hide a commission charge.(5) General wellbeing

Never drink or brush your teeth with the water, (and I never have ice in drinks),bottled water is extremely cheap. I take a Boots liquid mosquito killer to plug in, never been bitten with one of those in the room.
If you can hire the airconditioning if it is an option in your apartment in the summer, it makes the rooms a lot more comfy!

(6) Travel

If you hire a car make sure you get the damage waivers on the insurance, haggle and ask around. next to Mermaids is Hermes who I always use. NEVER hire mopeds.
When getting taxis always agree the fee before you set off, and never hire the horse and cart rides unless you want to be ripped off.

(7) The Beach

Rather than hiring sunbeds, buy a li-lo (dirt cheap) from one of the shops and lie on that on the beach, saves quite a few quid! You can also use it in the pool etc. the sand on the beach does get very hot, so take flipflops etc!(8) General

The Greeks are the friendliest people I`ve ever met and will remember you in years to come. sadly a lot of Brits let themslves down in Greece with slobbish behaviour, but give respect and you will get lastin friendships and will be well looked after!

(9) I always avoid Indian/Chinese type restaurants, firstly as I can have that for the same price in England and second it`s not authentic and generally poor quality. Try Greek dishes such as stuffed vine leaves, kleftiko, swordfish lemonato, the steaks, and Mermaids do the biggest Mixed Grill you`ll ever see for about £11. Their chicken chardonnay (although not a Greek dish) is to die for!
Tip well, it`s appreciated and you`ll be rewarded with extras on following visits

(10) If going to Laganas have a good time, it`s a party resort, but don`t go on the beach alone at night for safety reasons and the very occasional robbery

(11) Make sure you have your E111 forms before you go (see below)

(12) Greek people do get mildly offended if you refuse generosity or gifts, often I`ve been given a shot of a liqueur etc and have had to drink it or pass it on when not in view (!), but it`s a Greek tradition to be generous with guests, especially those with respect for the local people and customs!

(13) Never buy the tours off the reps as they`re double the price of the local run ones, and don`t do a full trip round the island by boat, you`ll burn and be seasick!

(14) Zante town is great for local gifts and souvenirs and has many authentic Greek bars and restaurants, check the opening times as they do have siesta etc

(15) Expect to pay a small cover charge (about 60 cents) per person when dining, all restaurants charge it and it includes bread.

(16) Cigarette prices are set by the government, there is little scope for haggling. BUY in Kalamaki not Laganas, some poorer quality cigs in Laganas that aren`t always what they say on the packet! Sofia`s shop near Mermaids is excellent, as is Limnos Supermarket. There is also a tiny little shop next to the Sirocco hotel run by a lovely lady who is very grateful for any large cig orders!

(17) Aftershaves/perfumes etc are cheapest in the airport on the return journey, (and you can put them in your hand luggage after weighing along with cigs hehe)

(18) There`s a few stray dogs and cats which are quite harmless that you will see, some will trot into the restaurants, they are perfectly friendly and only want a bit of fuss or food.
You`ll also see lots of lizards which climb up walls, again no danger, they`ll run off first!

(19) Check your E111 form is up to date. There has been a change in forms at the end of last year, so nip to the post office or you may get a shock if anything happens!

(20) There was a slighter higher rate of burglary last year, so when going out don`t leave any windows or doors open, it may get warm inside but it`s not as unpleasant as losing your belongings.

(21) Rose sellers. Not so bad last year, just say no and they`ll vamoose.

(22) You now queue outside the airport on your return if it is busy, take a hat and sunblock and plenty of water if a day flight especially. In the airport sadly there is no manners from many tourists, expect to not be offered a seat if you`re female or an older person/carrying a child etc, or to step over some drunken chavs lying on the floor. It`s only an hour or two though, so no matter what horror stories you`ve heard don`t worry about the airport!

(23) ATM machines - there is one near Limnos just near Mermaids

(24) Doctors - turn right past Cronulla Apartments and the doctor and chemist are there.

(25) Payphones. I found a corker rate-wise at Sofia`s shop. Seriously it is well worth even a little walk if you`re not nearby, fantastic savings compared to other phonebooths/mobiles.

(26) Mobiles. If you receive a call in Greece you also pay for some of it, be warned. If you`re planning on using it a lot BUY a Greek sim card, seriously.

(27) Supermarkets. I recommend Limnos and Sofia`s on the Kalamaki-Laganas road for excellent prices and service.

(28) Luggage allowance - apparently they`re cracking down on this on your return with some nasty penalties. I normally chuck away my beachtowel/ any half-used shampoos etc. It`ll save you a lot of money, you won`t believe how much you can actually bin if you need the space for your cigs and booze!
Think, you save about £28 per 200 cigs, same weight as a bottle of suntancream (£4 from supermarket!!)
Hope this helps, any info I can give email me anytime on ultrasound@supanet.comChris

Hi, Iam thinking of going to this resort in the summer and am wondering what the nightlife is like there. Im not a fan of benidorm type places myself yet would like to have a choice of things to do at night and in the daytime. Im wondering if thsi resort is still traditional but with a wee bit of life to it? Thanx

Julie I

hey everyone,
in 2001 we came to kalamaki for the first time, after staying in argassi twice, and although we enjoyed argassi it was a different kind of enjoyment!! this year (2005) we are returning to the wonderful kalamaki for a second time. i have read lots of your comments, and my only worry is that they haven't spoilt it to much adding on more buildings etc!!
thirteen of us came on our last visit all different ages ranging from 40somethings down to 8, both sexes and all of us fell in love with the place. the beach, the restaurants (some of the best on the island) and the bars. we liked michaelo's, mermaids, fawlty towers and we also spent a lot of time at the daisy's pool bar!!! this year we are staying at the dias studios and we really can't wait!! we are all from yorkshire too, but we know when we are on to a good thing and kalamaki is a good thing!!!
this year there will be 9 of us going out on sunday the 14th of august for 2 weeks from east midlands so anyone else who is going then maybe we can meet up and say "hi" we love zakynthos and our dream would be to re-locate out there in years to come.....maybe i'll do the lottery this week!!!!
to everyone who is visiting zakynthos and kalamaki this summer have a great holiday, relax and enjoy atmosphere that is greece!!!! thanx

Have been to Kalamaki twice before and have just booked for our third year. We stay at the Denny Apartments and use the pool at the Tonia next door.
Must say we have never had a bad holiday there, it's still peacfull enough to have a nice rest but still lots to do for our daughter (13). She always seems to meet loads of people her age and stays in contact with them when we get back.

Jo H

I went to the Golden Sun Hotel with my best friend and her two children ages 6 and 11. We loved it and thought it was not at all tacky, a perfect place for a family holiday.
There were enough resteraunts in the main road to eat somewhere different every night. The only thing we did not like was our trip into Laganas which looked like the nightmarish yobbie place, you see all the people on in the Holiday rep programmes.
Also, the fish in the sea bite your ankles.

Ken W

I wouldn't call Kalamaki a "tacky" resort. It may have a few cheap and chearful shops, but in the main, I'd class it as a good holiday resort. My own children are now grown up and have flown the nest. I wish I had found Kalamaki when they were younger. They'd have loved it. 10 year old? No problem!

We have just booked a 2 week holiday in Kalamaki for the 1st 2 weeks in August. I am a little concerned, after reading some of the comments that the resort may be a little 'tacky'. I am definitely not a snob but do not like 'Benidorm' type resorts. The brochures had said the resort is good for families, we have a 10 year old, do you think it will be suitable? Hope you can help!

I have been offered a good deal in May to either Dionysis or Two Brothers apartments (both at exactly same price) . Never been to Kalamaki. Have read reports on both and cant make up my mind tho prob Dionysis gets more fav reports. Want to be near bars/rest (beach doesnt matter), which one of these apartments has the best location? Thanks

Vickie M

Hi,
I'm off to Kalamaki in June this year. I've been to Laganos a couple of years ago and found it ok.
I'm going with my husband, parents, neice (12 years), nephew (2 years) and parents friends to the Exotica apartments and looking at most of the reviews I can't wait. My parents went to this hotel last year and loved it - does anyone else have any views ont this hotel. Also is it noisy due to aircraft flying over?

One lasat thing - what's the name of the horse riding place - is it mamas or Nanas or something like that?
cheers!

Amanda B

Message for Martin and "rep rep" - many thanks for the comments below. It is good to have positive feedback and we will now stop worrying and look forward to the summer!!!
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
Amanda

Rep R

Hi I know the costas very well as I've worked as the rep there. And very good freinds with the family.
Great Location not far from the main rd or beach.
The apts did not get many complaints last yr abt cleanliness. If you do have a problem just tell Takis one of the brothers.
Noise depends on what is planned for the night but does stop after 12.
Family run and a really friendly family.
Rooms basic but so much better then other self catering apts and they are redoing the old block.
Great adult and childrens pool
Please feel free if you have any more questions

This is for Amanda Balshaw don't change me and my wife & family had a great time in kalamaki in 2004 & 2002. The people there were fantastic and very helpfull. I hope this is of some help.

Amanda B

Can anyone out there help us with the decision as to whether we rearrange accommodation for our planned holiday?
We are booked into the Costas Apartments in Kalamaki with our 3 young children. The reports we have read are varied - either fantastic or terrible! My worry is that the terrible ones seem to be from other families, as opposed to younger people. We have visited the Greek Islands several times, but never Zante. We are not in the slightest bit concerned about "basic" accommodation - but want a friendly, peaceful and family time! We are seriously thinking about changing this. Any comments/help/advice welcome!!

Ken W

Hi Linda

My experiences in Kalamaki are restricted to the Hotel Marelen. For me it's been ideal for the last 4 years!
Pros:
Just a few hundred metres walk (flat) to a good beach
A pleasant 10 minute stroll to the beginning of the town
Good pool
Good poolside bar/snackbar at reasonable prices
Privately owned and managed, always clean
Fridge and aircon (at extra cost)but some rooms are self catering too
Taxi rank outside if you don't fancy the evening walk
Cons:
Aircraft noise, but this is not excessive, more of a novelty.
The occasional evening entertainment varies from passable to acceptable.

Try a search in Google for Hotel Marelen, and others, and you'll find some have their own websites (decent poolside photos etc.)

You can always book direct and arrange your own flights. This year they quoted me for mid September 2005 @ 40Euros per double room per night inc. breakfast and aircon. It's about a 10 minute taxi ride from the airport.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday in Zante

Ken

Linda M

Hi there. I wonder if anyone could help. I would like to go to Kalamaki in May with my husband and am looking for a nice hotel/apartment with air con, nice pool area (maybe with music) as we are not really beach people and good food cos we tend to eat at the accommodation through the day. We don't really need to be near the beach but would prefer to be within easy walking distance to bars and restaurants. I have looked at so many hotels that my head is spinning as they all seem to be good. Any comments would be much appreciated. Many thanks. PS. First time in Zante.

Chris C

Definiteky not! there is one or two stray dogs and cats but they are all friendly and don`t bother anyone!

D S

Have heard from a few people that i have spoken to about Zante that it appears to be quite over run with stray cats, as in the restaurants and some of the aparmtents/hotels. Is this the case in Kalamaki?

D S

Have heard from few people that i have spoken to about Zante that its quite over run with stray cats as in the restaurants and lots of the apartments/hotels. Is this the case in Kalamaki?

Lesley

both those hotel would suit ok, near all the bars and tavernas. try eating at a different place everyday, you wont be disappointed. have a good one.

D S

Looking to go to Kalamaki for the first time in May 05. Looking at Dennys Inn Hotel & Roseland, not really sure which would suit.Like accomodation near to bars etc (short walk)and good atmosphere at the pool and bar - music playing etc. Not beach people ( 2 females in mid 30s) so tend to eat breakfast and lunch at accomodation. Any suggestions would be great.

Chris C

Hey thanks for the compliment Kim!

Just to say Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to everyone on here, and esp those who came in Plus Soda when I DJed in July and September and keep in touch all of you!

We have just returned from a week at the Amaryllis Apartments, and already on count down until next May. It was very quiet, unforunately Cave Bar, Zepos, & Mustang Saloon were closed but the few places that were open made up for it.

Glenn T

JUST GOT BACK FROM KALAMAKI 13TH OCT. WE STAYED @ THE CARETTA BEACH HOTEL . THE OWNER TAKIS AND HIS LOVELY WIFE MARINA WERE SIMPLY THE BEST , ALSO THE STAFF AS WELL , CANNOT RAVE ABOUT THE PLACE ENOUGH. YOU WANT A TOP QUALITY HOTEL , STAY AT CARETTA BEACH. LOCAL EATING OUT PLACES ,DIAZ IS THE BEST , ITS JUST A 3 MINUTE WALK FROM CARETTA BEACH HOTEL , ALSO MERMAIDS ON THE HIGH ST . PANDESIA IS ANOTHER TOP QAULITY PLACE TO EAT . IF YOU ARE STAYING AT THE CARETTA BEACH ,PICK UP A BIZZ CARD FROM RECEPTION AND YOU GET 10% DISCOUNT ON ALL MEALS .ALL IN ALL WE WILL BE RETURNIG THERE NEXT YEAR .

Dave H

Just got back from our first visit to Zante. Stayed at Dennys Inn Hotel in Kalamaki. Very good hotel with helpful staff and very clean. Comfort of beds left a lot to be desired but that was the only thing we could criticise.

Spent most of our time on Kristal Beach which we found cleaner than the nearer beaches to the hotel.

Best restaurants - Dias (Steak Madera)and Buon Amici (Pasta Piccanti?). Lovely bakery on main street serving wonderful cakes and a decent cup of coffee.

We lkoved the lay back atmosphere and found the locals to be really helpful. We will return, but perhaps leave it for a year or two.

Peter R

Just returned from Kalamaki. If your idea of holiday is a British resort with sunshine - Kalamaki is for you. If you want a Greek holiday - forget Kalamaki.
The main (only) street is lined with restaurants all serving roughly the same menus, bars all with big screen TVs all playing as loudly as possible to outdo the next bar. The shops were all tourist-tat type shops and supermarkets serving the self-catering guests.
Having given the downside, we did actually enjoy our stay. Hired a car for 3 days (Merlis) and travelled all over the island. Very spectacular scenery. Favourite spot was Keri Beach - more Greek than other resorts - a couple of tavernas, nice harbour, small beach, good swimming.
Forget package transfers from airport to Kalamaki - it's only 5 minutes and 10 euros by taxi.
Re the airport - it's HORRENDOUS. At least using taxi for return you can set off an hour after the transfer buses and still be in plenty of time.

Jo S

Just got back from my first ever visit to Zante - and as far as I'm concerned I couldn't have picked a better to place to start, my hopefully, long relationship with the island!

Julieann S

ARRIVED BACK IN THE UK 11 OCT HAD 2 WEEKS OUT IN KALAMAKI. GREAT TIME AND GREAT PLACE. WE STAYED IN THE ATHINA APRTMENTS ON THE MAIN ROAD THROUGH KALAMAKI. Ken G

Spent our Honeymoon in Kalamaki (11th -25th Sept). We really loved it. Brillant weather, different restaurants to try out every night, great value, great food, lovely people. Plenty of shops. Nudist beach was great for the allover tan and very easy going. BBQ Steak House was our favourite restaurant, try it. Stayed in Hotel Sirocco, very nice. We've been to a few different places over the years, many we would not go back to but we both want to go back to Zakynthos. Really lovely place!

Ken W

Hi Sarah

Look at this weather site http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/16719.html# and go to the history section. You can then search specific dates from the past to see what the weather was like. There used to be a link on this Just Zante site, but for some reason it was withdrawn. Pity really 'cos I found it very useful.

As for Kalamaki, we've just returned from our 4th consecutive visit. We are fortunate enough to be able to treat this as an Autumn Break rather than a main holiday. The Hotel Marelen was as welcoming as ever, but on our first night, whilst walking into the town, we wondered whether or not it was the right thing for us to return yet again (you know the feeling, been there, done that, washed the Tee Shirt). 24 hours later, we were absolutely certain it was the right thing to do. It was sooooo relaxed, perfect weather, our favourite restaurants and bars welcomed us like long lost friends. No driving, no phone ringing off the hook, a daily stroll along the beach to Laganas for lunch. Perfick. We'll be there again next year.

Gary D

I think this was the best resort for couples looking for a relaxing holiday. We had a grest time and could recommend the Denny's Inn for accomodation and there are loads of great places to eat and drink. Iguana is a brilliant pub for everyone and we can only thank Harris & his family for their hospitality.

Sarah B

Going to Kalamaki in just under two weeks. has anyone been there in October? Does the weather stay fine?

Emma C

I went to Kalamaki for 2 weeks. The beach is O.K, cigarette buts spoilt it, the sea is so clear though. We got hassled for the whole two weeks by lucky lucky men and bar and restaurant PR's. I definately recommend hiring a car out to see the rest of the island it i so beautiful especially the west coast, I would advise not to hire a car with Eurosky as we had a problem with the car when receiving it and all we got was abuse. Zante's main attractions are the Shipwreck and the turtles, it's ashame they don't do anything for the stray dogs they are lovely and it is rumoured at the end of the season they shoot them. Overall the holiday is O.K I don't know whether I would go back now I've seen it but until they create a bigger airport I definately wouldn't go back.

Lesley B

there are 2 waterparks now, the small one just on the outskirts of laganas and a bigger one further inland, the local tour operators do day trips if you dont have transport, book with the locals, its loads cheaper than if you book with the reps. we love kalamaki, 9 times now. always the best holiday ever.

Denise W

Thanks Helen for your reply, only 4 days to go cant wait...

Helen G

its in lagana, 5 minutes down the road from kalamaki, u can do it as a day trip or get a taxi ther for bout 7/8 euros! wikid day out

Denise W

Hi,can someone please tell me where the new water park opened this year?staying in kalamaki Sirene apts thanks

Helen G

Joan, i stayed at louros beach hotel in august, its a loverly hotel! gorgeous pool! taxi should cost about 10 euros from airport, not far from restaurents and bars quite near the main strip but out of the way if u get me! depends on how far u wanna walk! the strip is quite long! go to downunder! but thts about a 15 minute walk but well worth it! hope thts helped u out from helen

Wendy B

I have been to Kalamaki 5 times now and have always had a good holiday. So much so that we have booked a party of 20 of us to go back there next year. Recommend a visit to Michaelo's restaurant, very friendly and family orientated. TIP: Don't waste time with insect repellents - buy a spray bottle from the chemist and mix a little dettol with water and use this instead - it's more effective - AND CHEAPER!

Jane L

Returned from Kalamaki on Monday, unfortunately there only for a week, still as beautiful and relaxing as we remembered it from 4 years ago. Our recommendations to definitely include in your holiday are: 1. The Cave Bar - Nikos makes the best cocktails in the resort (probably on the island!) 2. Paris taverna - good food, friendly staff 3. The Zakanoh/Zakynthian taverna (opposite drunk corner)- set back from the main road in lovely gardens, excellent food, the best we had there though you pay a little more 4. Michaelos taverna - great atmosphere, good food and friendly waiters. 5. Pool bar at Crystal Beach - fantastic view, and thanks to Lisa the lovely barwoman. We'll be back!
Jane and Chris

Tom T

At first i thought i had made a mistake but then i loved it. we prefer quieter and relaxing holidays and this is the place to go , but they have got a selection of bars and excellent restaurants here (paris , zepos and mickealos- great)and laganas is just down the road if you want more 5mins drive (6e in taxi). overall a great holiday. well worth a visit

Mike W

Joan,
Go to the home page on this website and type the hotel name into the search function on the top left side an it will take you to all the comments left on the site about the hotel, location etc. You will find the whole resort is walkable in 10 minutes and there are plenty of restuarants offering very good value. You can negotiate will taxi drivers for fares but it should cost no more than 10 Euros max from the Airport (they run 24-7). Car hire is now regulated such there is no difference between most companies - they can be hired at the airport or at kalamaki . There are loads of them along the main street renting push bikes, scooters, cars and jeeps . I rented a 5 seater with belts and A/C (essential) Suzuki for 3 days for 105 euros. Driving to the north of the island over the mountain roads can be scary if you have vertigo. Its a quiet resort and people are welcome to use any pool in any hotel. If you want a late night in a noiser spot, Laganas is 3km away by taxi approx 7E.There is a waterpark just outside Zante town which the tour companies charge 25E for . Its small so if you go after 2.30pm in the afternoon you will pay half price (closes at 6.30pm).
Enjoy your stay

Joan H

have just booked two weeks at louras beach hotel kalamaki. Does anyone knoe how far out from good eating and watering holes this hotel is? Also how much should taxi from airport cost. Which is best car hire??

Mike W

Andy,
Good for kids, you can use any of the hotel pools - some are a wee bit deep si this gives you a choice for the kids. Bring some mossie spray and one of those plug in expellers for the kids room - if hiring a car make sure its got A/C - I'm in Kalamaki at he mo, want any specific info, just ask and I'll give you my email address.

Cheers
Mike

taking my two daughters to kalimaki in september ages 23 months and 4 months any tips fo a fab holiday thanks.andy

Liz C

Merlis rental have a very good reputation. Julie Rutherford is the contact in the office that I have spoken to many times. This year I was there and she says that all car hire prices across Zante have been fixed by the authorities this year.

Merlis deliver the car to your hotel first thing and pick it up at the end of the rental.

Hope this helps, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday
Cheers

I'm going to Kalamaki later in the year. I'm not
hiring a car before I go but intend to get one for
a few days when I'm there. Any

Hi, My fiance and I were in Kalamaki in May and we loved it. (We are slowly working our way through the Greek Islands)!!!!
We loved the beaches, the people, everything!!!! I've been recommending it so much my boss has been and now my Mum and Dad are there at the minute in Alikinas.
Weather was perfect in May only 1 raining day you could spend all day out as not too hot.
I would like to go back again in the high season as was a little quite at the start of May! But loved it all the same!!
Hope everyone else enjoys it as much as we did!!

Kate W

Me and my boyfriend went to Kalamaki in May and we loved it!!! We have been to places like Cyprus and Spain before and fancied a more quiet holiday this time. We found the Greek especially friendly and we are hoping to go back next year. We stayed at The Venus Hotel where the staff were always willing to help! I would recommend Kalamaki to anybody.

Debbie W

Hi to everyone that had a great holiday in kalamaki. i would just like to say that myself and my husband went to kalamaki on june 1st we had a fantastic time and we have booked to come back next year. as to the comments of trevor hamilton i cant think what planet he was on he certainly wasnt in kalamaki. i cant understand why he slated the place as he did. i really enjoyed reading chris chadwicks comments i think they was brilliant.

Mike W

Chris,
The airline First Choice finally phoned me yesterday to say my gear was in Turkey ! They "hope" to fly it back to the UK today and out here tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm buying enough to keep me going on a daily basis !! Hey I saw a gign for a new waterpark but there seems to be little info on where it is and how to get to it. Anybody got info on it ? Cheers

Chris C

Jemma P

Me and my partner have just returned from the best two week holiday I have ever had, we have both badly got the holiday blues and cannot wait to return back to Kalamaki again one day. We thought the Cave bar was fantastic you have to visit there if you go to Kalamaki great music, cocktails, staff and of course the view is amazing. Really recommend on hiring a car etc, we had one four days and got to see everything. We especially loved banana beach it was gorgeous. We stayed in the Athina apartments and they were fantastice really clean and had a pretty garden when lit up at night. Laganas was great too there is something for everyone there if you look properly. Our best day there was defently looking over the balcony onto the shipwreck it was breathtaking and so was driving round the cliff tops to get there, it was great fun. Wish we were back there and I envy anyone who is due to go, have a great time...

Lesley B

mike, do you mean your daughter has bad reactions to the mozzies?, if so.... boots sell a good repellant, containing deet, its just called 'boots extra strong' its in a silver container, also you can get loads of stuff locally, repellants and after bite, if you look on the kalamaki messageboard, it might be a few pages back, theres a section titled nasty flying beasties, (or something similar) theres some tips on there. have a good one xxx

Lorna F

Hey, just returned bk from Kalamaki 2 days ago, n all I can say is WOW. This is my first visit too Kalamaki and I reli hope its not my last. It had everyfin u need, the people are so gr8, and the pubs r so gd esp. down under n plus soda.

Travelling shortly . first time in Greece. got a daughter who bug adverse. Any recommendations on what to bring or can you buy locally ? Cheers and Thanks

M

Ok now this is a message for the moody old git called Trevor:
First of all i have been to this island for 6 years, 2 times a year, same resort and same apartment.
I have travelled to lots of other places
*Yugoslavia
*Gran Caneria
*Tenerife x3
*Ibiza
*Majorca x2
*South Spain
*Portugal
*Austria
*Paris and the list goes on.

Kalamaki is my favourite place out of the lot. Like Chris and alot of other people who enjoyed their holiday, the island has to cater for the tourist otherwise they won't like it, thats why you get the fake bags, and belts, etc, but it's real leather.
as for the comment about not being clean, its the tourist that do it, do you really expect the locals to go along the beach to pick up old fag butts and rubbish, there are bin provided. the people who are on turtle watch pick up plastic bags and anything that could harm the turtles.
as for the food it is YUMMY.

i think that you may just be a low wage, stuck up snobb with nothing better to do than moan about every grain of sand on the beach and every grain of salt in the salt shaker.

GET A LIFE

Just returned from Kalamaki as first timers who love the Greek islands, what can I say - excellent. Basic but excellent accommodation at Antonis Appts, good food, good entertainment & excellent company.
PS. We saw 2 turtles, one we watched for over 20 minutes - superb!

Sandra P

Love Kalamaki, although I wouldn't like to see it grow much more. The old part of Kalamaki, was very quiet, not many people seem to venture past the taxi rank, the bars down there were virtually empty, which is a pity.

Steven M

I've just returned from my first visit to Zante and all i can say is OH MY GOD!!!! I had the most fantastic time - the beach was excellent and was even lucky enough to see a turtle. Everyone is so friendly and to quote the slogan on the Dias napkins "They Care More"!!! Greek Night at Mermaids is a night NOT to miss!!! Although it get better in the second half when they do the flame dancing and plate smashing. Plus Soda the bar next door is a must as well - all very friendly and cheap cocktails! Nicky the "hostess with the mostess"!! made are nights there really enjoyable. She is just the best - and helped me win 1st prize on the quiz night!! If you go tell her hello from Steven and Woz! I am on my way now to the travel agents to book again for 2005!

Chris C

So where`s this fantastic restuarant your brother owns then trev, can we compare it to Mermaids, let us know and I`ll call in for a pizza next time I`m in Yorkshire (there every week on business) and give you an honest opinion on the comparison

John T

sorry your hotel room towels were'nt big enough to wrap around your large gut, trev. your poor wife must have caught an ear infection from your constant whinging. stick to the yorkshire dales if your not happy with the greek islands.
i know it must have been hard for you to save up for your greek holiday, with your under paid job. some of us skilled men don't have to worry where the next penny is coming from.
you must be an ex-miner who can only get a job as a car-park attendant( you know, the one with the dodgy limp)
you should have stuck to the salads all week, then maybe you could see your p***k for the first time in a long time, fat boy, instead of the use of mirrors.
as for being a so called yorkshireman,(hard working, fear nothing, beer drinker) you make me sick. you sound like a faggot that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.if you cut me in half, you'd see that it reads south yorkshire. so get a grip fat boy and leave the nice greek people alone...........a true yorkshireman.

Strange that....mountain spring water even though the restaurant is at sea level---thats novel....no wonder it world famous.

Suppose they ship the water in by tanker....Think its time to waken up Chris{S>

Chris C

Trevor I debated with you in a friendly manner below but you have since been on the Mermaids site slating me.

my email is ultrasound@supanet.com

You obviously hated your holiday, fair enough, can`t please everyone, but I have eaten in 85% of Kala restaurants. I have often been in the kitchens at mermaids. Bet you also don`t know that under the restaurant are two huge water tanks for mountain spring water to wash salad etc in, not the tapwater other restaurants use.
Even the slush machine is filled with quality bottled mineral water.

the food is fresh every day, and all the meats are specially imported.

I think it`s extremely unfair mate that you posted incorrect points on their website.

Mark R

This was the first time that we've visited Zante and it was absolutely brilliant. It's ideal for everyone from young to old. We booked next years holiday as soon as we got back home. I seem to have had a bit of a memory lapse since i've been back and forgotten the name of the restauant next to the Panorama Taverna. Can anyone give me it's name as we ate there on our last night and the food was the best we had had. Thanks

Rob W

Me a 7 pals stayed at Denny's Inn in Kalamaki for the first time. The staff r great and u can have a laugh with them. The night life is great all the local bars r great and the owners of Venue looked after us every night we went there. The night life in Laganas is none that I have ever come across it's fabulous all the people r out to have a good time and not have a punch up even the English!!! This is far the best country that I have ever been and I've been a lot of places. 100 out of 10!!!

Julie G

for mr adolf hamilton dont go to blackpool never have never will cant stand the english weather... you are entitled to your own opinion but come on really you cant compare kalamaki with blackpool... is this the 1st time you've been abroad and have you only just gone on the net as you only seem to go on the kalamaki site....

Trevor H

Sorry for speaking Julie

Is this site not for expressing opinions....good and bad.

If you cant accept others opions with a bit of grace tthen you should not even be reading this site.

Cant figure out your comments regarding a bit of class....surely you are not talking about Kalamaki in regarding to class. You will probably be telling us all Blackpool is classy next.

Julie G

i dont know why tourists are pulling down kalamaki.. i've been going there for ten years and made lots of greek friends.. the only other place i've been as friendly was crete.. when you go abroad surely the foreigners dont have to change for the tourists... so what, they have tacky jewelery and loads of blow up beach toys but we love it at least it hasnt got like spain or the canary islands they are tacky.. i'm like you chris a bit of class you know who are ligit people not like spain where they take your money and smile then dont want to know you(oh sorry unless you are handing some money over..)but in the greek islands they ask you to there weddings and around to their homes to meet there families or even come to England to visit(they are true friends..they dont take you for what they can... )we will keep going back and back
and as for you mr hamilton go to an all inclusive where you dont have to leave your surroundings then you cant moan................think you must have been on every kalamaki site going.............................................

Laura H

We stayed at da rainbow, it was a lovely place wiv v.friendly ppl!! We got well known by all da crew down plus soda as da manchestoh girlz!! It woz a propa fun holiday & da cruise was well gud. If u go make sure u get 2 plus soda, it is a buzzin club & u r guaranteed a laugh - as long as u get dancin!!!

Chris C

Hi Trevor. I forst went to Kalamaki in 1998 and it was very different, I`m as proud to be English as anyone but I feel that sadly in some cases the expansion (not just in size) of Kalamaki, I`m talking about the anglicisation of bars, shops etc and the tolerance of some pretty ignorant behaviour to local people by Brits abroad has maybe contributed to the points you`ve made, I know local people want to make money (I would too!), but it`s the same as if you go to a Chinese takeaway in England, Chinese people don`t eat any food similar to what they sell, it`s catering for the customer!

I will always love Kalamaki, I would certainly be concerned however if it expanded any more in size! I do think also that tour operators should promote it as a separate town, not a Laganas overspill which they sometimes seem to imply!

Trevor H

Hi Chris....thanks for the fair enough comment...think was something to do with reading all the glowing reviews on this site{S> I always think a lot of Greek resorts are a bit samey....there are some nice places that I think are brilliant but Kalamaki I dont think is one of them....there are a lot more picturesque villages..c

Jenna M

MY BEST HOL YET ITS A MUST

Carl C

I agree with alot of the below comments from the previous author though sadly! The greek pedlo chap did the only cleaning I saw! Nice chap...7euro for pedlo for one hour. Watch the white fish - killers :-)

Carl C

I will add some photos here asap. very nice beach and the water is soo blue. the little white fish freaked me out at Kalamaki beach...turtle everywhere. I see some babies deep down. The turtle trip from Lagana is a must apparently!"

Chris C

Trevor, this isn`t a dig mate but why did you go to Kalamaki, you`re on the net so you must have found out a bit about it?
I agree about many restaurants pestering though, Argassi is terrible for it, every bar and restaurant and you can only smile through clenched teeth so many times before being rude!

Trevor H

As someone mentioned below 'nothing tacky about Kalamaki' Just think of:

Loads of tat shops selling crap
People hassling to get you into bar and restarants
Shops selling cheap jewellery, fake watches and similar junk
Best selection of inflatable toys anywhere
And certainly the best selection of fake belts, bags, t-shirts you could ever hope for!!!
Bars showing 'Only fools and Horses' ---although I think Del and Rodney are ace...dont really want to fly 1800 miles to watch them on telly.

As for the beach as mentioned below.....narrow, not very nice sand, full of plastic bags and millions of fag butts. The Greeks must not think that much of it or else they would maybe clean the bloomin place. Well, I suppose they dont worry about the junk that lies around most of the island so why worry about the beach. Its on ly the daft English that go there...they wont mind the rubbish!!!!{S>So, its not tacky then??? So if someone can point out to me....if it was tacky....what would that involve....I dread to think.

James T

Kalamaki is lovely. Quite quiet (Restaurants do a roaring trade but the bars are almost empty). The beach is perfect, you only need to walk 100m along it to have your own bit of sand with no one nearby. All the natives are friendly (Though they are entrepreneurs and all the prices seem to shoot up when they see you're a tourist!!)

Stephen V

Much better than expected. Intending to visit several more times in the future. Would live there if the airport and flight availability were better all year round.

Leigh-anne R

i went with sis and mum and dad we loved it here and lagnas was great too!
good places we liked was kaeoke at grubnasgrus, meals at mikelos and mermaid, the boat trip, the new soda plus club, antonis bar,the beach, the cocktails haha

didnt like the indian meal fromt the place near grubnasgrus(and that guy outside tryin to get people in, the young english guy well what a letching creep p**vin at us every day so much we didnt like walking past)
down under bar was horrible we got followed back by two guys on a moped whod been tryin to touch us all night but we love kalimaki and cant wait till next yr!

Bekki W

I've stayed in Kalamaki 3 times now, and it is the best place ever!
Me and a couple of my friends are going back next year for our first girls holiday, and will b staying in the best apartment "Sirene Apartments".
There is definately nothing tacky about Kalamaki, so when reading other comments about it being tacky take no notice, its a typical laid back greek resort so it clearly wont have Chanel will it?
There is anything that you can fault in Kalamaki!

Janet P

We visited Kalamaki at the end of May for the fourth time. It has expanded since we first visited but is still fairly quiet. Saw lots of turtles in the sea.
Best restaurant is Mermaids. Con and his crew are very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. You can eat Greek or choose from a very large menu and the specials are brilliant. Try the steak and also the ribs. Stannis near the beach is also very good.
Our favourite bar was Scorpios where the three brothers made us very welcome. Watch out for the Sambuca shots

Mike C

There are some great restaurants in Kalamaki and I'd recommend Paolos, Mermaids and Pandesia as the best and all have very friendly staff. The bars are fairly samey, Drunk Corner had a great atmosphere for Euro 2004, Oasis cocktail bar was decent, Kalamaki Beach Taverna was nice for lunch even though the beach was disappointing.
Overall, not the best holiday I've had but certainly not the worst.

Richard A

Why did you go on holiday then?
Kalamaki is lovely, we have two days left of a great holiday.

Only Downside this year is the PRs trying to get you in every restaurant bar a couple, mainly Indian and Chinese.

Also avoid Down Under like the plague, we had to rescue our daughter from there last night and the place is full of paralytic teens snogging each other with local lads in their twenties eyeing up the girls.

Apart from that it`s same as our last visit two years ago and very good holiday!

Trevor H

Thought it was all a bit average. Just a couple of long roads with loads of tacky shops and buildings along the sides. Much prefer Tsilivi on the other side of the island. Beach is just pretty average. Not very wide and loads of rubbish. Lots of hazzle from touts trying to get you into bars/clubs. If you like Blackpool then you will probably love the place. Personally i cant think of any redeeming features about it. It was described on this site as having a village feel---you must be kiddding!!

There are a lot of nicer places in Zante and a lot more in other Greek islands with a lot nicer countryside and a lot less tackiness. In Kalamaki there is not one resturant that you can sit and have a nice view ie over the sea or harbour and not over a busy main road.

You either love it or hate...personally I cant understand why anyone would save their hard earned money up to go there for 2 weeks---takes all kinds!!!

Andrew R

We have just returned from Kalamaki - our third visit in 12 months!! It has everything, the nightlife is there if you want it, or you can go to Laganas - not for the fainthearted! The restaurants are superb - would recommend Mermaids, Parthenon, Merlis and Michaelos. They are all fantastic, offering excellent Greek food at very reasonable prices. I reckon you'd be hard put to spend more than 30 Euros per couple. For shopping (eg self-catering, food etc) try Limnos supermarket near Hermes car rental. We hired a scooter and visited Tsilivi which, in my opinion has the best beach. It only takes around 15-20mins and it's well worth it. All the bars are great - specially Rose and Crown, Conulla Hotel bar (fantastic family run hotel with pool facilites free to all)and Down Under. You can walk from one end of the resort to the other in about 1/2 hour with many bars and tavernas along the way! All in all a fantastic resort suitable for couples, families or singles!

Donna S

Have just returned from a fortnight in Kalamaki and loved it so much am planing to go back in September. Something for everyone and for those of you looking for a great night out try Down Under on the main Kalamaki strip. Say Hi to George;Kim;Andonis and Nic who run the bar and wach those dodgy shots!!!! For a fab lunch pop into Claudes and speak to Helena - otherwise known as Irish. Best evening meal is definiley Mermaids.

Valerie G

Just back from our holiday in Zante and we loved it! Kalamaki was a great place- best thing for me was seeing and swimming with the Turtles on the beach - best time to see them is about 5pm. Tavernas were plentiful and all the ones we went to were very good and cheap. Local wine is recommended and very cheap for a litre. Nightlife is there if you want it or you can easily get to Laganas. Noise from planes was not really a problem as there are no night flights but there were a couple of days a week when there were flights at 5am. All in all it was a great holiday.
