Sugar Reef - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

Large V  (15 July 2004)

Went to Kalamaki the start of June this year, just arrived at the apartments myself and girlfriend decided to go out for some thing to eat as we strolled out of the apartments we took a left and headed up towards the taxi rank only to be greeted by a guy touting for buisness outside a restaurant on the left hand side which looked new and immediatly said to my girlfriend, "our first night thats all we need now, people trying to shove us into some place and we are only 2hrs on the island,we thought we got this only in tacky resorts" but thankfully my partner noticed another restaurant directly across the road, we went over to have a look at the menu before the tout could come and start hassling us.To cut a long story short while my partner was looking at the extensive menu out side I was looking into the entrance between the lovely trees and flora it looked like the most peaceful and easy going place,it reminded me of other up market restaurants We have been in other Greek Islands, we decided to go in and were greeted by two very pleasent staff members we found out one of them was the owner, Dennis .We ordered our meals and God were they good, Dennis explained to me that his Mam Angela did all the cooking it was heavenly.(they do the most wonderful greek cuisine and also have an extensive international menu and are opened for breakfeasts also.)We then started to look at the cocktail list, I never saw the names of the cocktails on his list before, it wasn't your usual rubbish you get any where like Harvey wall bangers, etc. etc. they were ones he actually invented himself and won competitions with,if you don't believe me take a look at his trophies and photos behind the bar !! and if there is one you want made with your favourite tipple then nothing is impossible to this genius, we went to two other restaurants after that night which was reccommended to us by other people, but what a mistake. In the Sugar Reef, the service, the relaxing athmosphere the kindness of the entire staff which made us so comfortable, special was second to none, the food is out of this world, andat a very reasonable price, but its not the price even though inexpensive, its the quality and the the whole Greek thing that makes this fine restaurant worth visiting. We would reccomend this restuarant to anyone who might read this comment and we hope to make it back to Kalamaki next year, again Dennis Angela,Jimmy and John, thank you again for the most enjoyable two weeks it was a pleasure.

Sugar Reef - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

We went back to Zakynthos again this year, the last week in August and first in September. This time we stayed in Argassi, where there is plenty to do, but we had to go back and visit Kalamaki, which I think is the best place in Zakynthos - it's like a magnet, but the I think that the biggest attraction has to be the Sugar Reef restaurant, with Dennis and his very friendly family and staff. We actually went there most of the time we were out whether it was after the beach or for our night out. I think that it serves the best food and service on the island at very reasonable prices and the cocktails - they are just to die for!!! You have the usual cocktails that you can get everywhere you go - but also, cocktails you have never heard of before, which they have made up themselves and are of course a trade secret - including an "Easy J". Dennis told me that he called it after one of his customers who asked him to make up something to his taste - and boy that guy (the one it's named after) must have some taste!!! When we arrived Dennis and co. made us feel so welcome again (like we were old friends), and this applies to everyone who enters the Sugar Reef whether you have been there before or not.

If you are thinking of going to Kalamaki in the future, I would highly recommend this place to go to, whether it's for food, drinks or just a bit of craic.

Anyway Dennis, thanks for all the hospitality and fun we had while we were there and hope to see you early next year. Have a great Christmas and new year.
