Zante Beach Guide

For a relatively small island Zakynthos has more than its fair share of fine beaches, one of the main reasons for its popularity with tourists and the Loggerhead Sea Turtles. All of the main resorts (with the exception of Argassi) have excellent beaches on their doorstep, and if you venture outside of the resorts there are plenty more to discover.

Vassilikos in particular has a great selection of beaches ranging from St Nicholas with its watersports and lively atmosphere to Gerakas which has been voted one of the top beaches in the whole of Greece. Be warned though that there is only one road into and out of Vassilikos and it gets very busy in July and August. A holiday outside of this period might be better if you want to avoid the crowds.

Sea Turtles are very much part of the beach scene on Zante. The development of tourist resorts, in particular Laganas, has made large sections of beach unsuitable for the turtles to lay their eggs, and as turtles always return to the same part of the beach, the loss of any section of beach will inevitably result in a decline in the turtle population. The creation of the National Marine Park has at least limited the amount of development in Laganas Bay to the benefit of both turtles and tourists
