When the god Zeus fell in love with the beauteous nymph Io, his jealous wife Hera pursued her, forcing her to escape by swimming across the sea to the west. In giving this myth a special significance, one could say that the Ionian sea derives its beauty from the nymph Io and that it has gone down in history as the passage from east to west.
