| Zante Yachting Bureau - OtherNew Yachting Holidays for all tastes and pockets starting from Zante and exploring the Ionian Islands, the playground of sailors for so many years, with gentle winds and so many islands to explore. The Ionian Sea is Ideal for sea-side vacations and sailing/yachting holidays. Summer breezes rarely reach force 5 and they usually come from foreseeable directions (North or West) at a foreseeable time of day (afternoon). This helps immeasurably in planning a trip. The Myriad picturesque little harbours are within an easy distance of each other and are safe refuges for relaxation and swimming for crews whose experience is small. The area is blessed with a lovely verdant countryside. Its style of architecture, especially in the smaller villages, has retained its traditional aspect and blends elements of various civilisations that have passed through this significant crossroads of the Mediterranean, with its tumultuous history. The Ionian boundaries are the west coast of Greece, the east coast of Sicily and the south coast of Italy, whereas to the south it ends in an imaginary line that links Capo Passero of Sicily with Kavo Matapa (Tainaro) of the Peloponnese. From two ancient Greek writers, Aeschylus and Apollonius the Rhodian, we learn the origin of the name of the Ionian Sea. When the god Zeus fell in love with the beauteous nymph Io, his jealous wife Hera pursued her, forcing her to escape by swimming across the sea to the west. In giving this myth a special significance, one could say that the Ionian sea derives its beauty from the nymph Io and that it has gone down in history as the passage from east to west. Lush, green Corfu, barer mainland look of Lefkas, savage beauty of mountainous Kefalonia and Ithaka, and the nearly bucolic picture of Zakynthos create indelible impressions.
