Alykes Tourist Train - (Zante Excursions)

Laura

Tourist train - where do I get it from (I'm staying in Alikanas). Where do I book? how much is just the train? How much is the greek night? How does it link to the Greek night people have mentioned -do you book the train separately or is there a day a week, for example, when you can do the train AND the greek night? Sounds like a good excursion! Thanks for any info anyone can give me.

Whitehouse Studios - (Accommodation in Alykanas)

Laura

These are great apartments!  The location is unbeatable for the beach and also the tavernas.  The apartments are kept spotless and you can also pay for air-con - a blessing!

The pool areas is lovely too.  My only disappointment was that they had been advertised by First Choice as ideal for couples.  This would have been the case if you are a couple who likes to sit next to the pool when it has been totally overtaken by rowdy  screeching kids who should have been at school during term-time!  A shame, because if it had been quieter I could have had the perfect holiday - as it was, I felt I had to go to the beach just for some peace and quiet!  Apart from that, would recommend highly...

Arhondico (Memories) - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

We really really liked this taverna (why does it have 4/10 on the main bit?  I'm confused?!).  The service is very gentle and friendly, the food is yummy (we had saganaki, a chicken and a pork dish and tuna salad, tiramisu etc on various different nights) and the prices were particularly pleasing!

It's in a slightly more tranquil part of town so that was great too.  Definitely one of our faves - seemed to get everything 'just right'!

Fairly nice taverna - good fish.

Katerinas Kitchen - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura   (31 July 2006)

I ordered a mixed souvlaki here and got a pork one instead which was inedible.  It was all gristle and swimming in fat.  To be fair, my boyfriend enjoyed his meal and the service was good.  Bit off the beaten track but peaceful for it.

Unsure of this one really...

La Caretta - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

An ok taverna.  I thought the doormen were probably one of the pushiest in the midst of town but still OK.  The food was fine, nothing particularly memorable.

Our problem was that we were unfortunately sat at a table that was very close to the children's play area and the bar next door and we felt like we were eating in the midst of Piccadilly Circus!  We should have asked to move in retrospect.

I prefer the more peaceful restaurants at either end of the central 'strip' but if you like loud and lively then you'll get a decent feed here and probably enjoy the ambience, as it is.

Dionisos - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

Friendly service, good quality food (a lovely chicken souvlaki here - the best I had in Alykanas) and a relaxed but still quite 'buzzy' vibe.  Definitely try it out.

Sorry forgot to rate it!

Levante - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

Although not a particularly memorable taverna, the food was good and plentiful.  I didn't 'warm' to the taverna's in the midst of the 'strip' so I'm probably a bit biased - if this taverna had been in a more quiet spot, I'd probably have really liked it.  I'd eat there again (my fella liked the huge steak he had there)

Psarapoula Lemon Tree - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

My favourite!  Such a romantic, tranquil and really very pretty setting.  The food was utterly scrumptious on the several occasions we ate there.  Got very busy but the service still attempted to keep up.  I had the sardines which were really good.  Oh and the shrimp cocktail to start was lovely because they were fresh prawns (unlike the defrosted ones in many of the other tavernas).

Romantic to catch the horse and trap up there, but really hope the horses are well looked after - it annoyed me when greedy groups got in them with about 6 people - they should limit the number of people in them because I can't believe some of the smaller horses can really pull all that weight...

Taj Mahal and Golden Dragon - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Laura

Quite unsure about this one - I agree with the comment a couple below this one - it seemed to have a quite an odd atmosphere.  The food was really quite average, in fact I'd have preferred to eat at another Greek taverna (it was the smell that got me as I walked past!  The food didn't live up to its smell and was misordered so we had to wait).  We ate from the chinese menu which was ok, but seemed to taste quite 'processed'.  local wine here was bit ferral too.

The asian lady was very pleasant but several of the waiters were exceptionally slow and seemed to leave most of the work to her, whilst they chatted to their mates!

Don't think I'd recommend this one - not sure I'd say I hated it but don't honestly think I could recommend... Maybe visit and make up your own minds

Alykanas Beach - (Beaches in Zante)

Laura

This is a lovely beach - the sand is really soft.  The sea is so shallow and beautifully clear!  There's a good range of water sporty/activities like pedoloes with slides and jet ski's etc which seemed reasonably priced.  Summer 06  - 2 beds and a parasol cost 7 Euros.

I liked the fact it wasn't a very wide beach because it meant that it was less crowded.

Watch out if you're there at about 5pm ish in summer as a very strong breeze starts!  Actually swimming then made for some great wave jumping!

Horse Riding - (Zante Excursions)

Laura

We booked to visit Marie's farm (via Tony at Dionisus - v. helpful.  Cost 20 Euros per hour and Marie will collect you and drop you back - not inc in the hour's ride).

Marie was friendly and very competent (she had a baby boy, by the way).  I rode Xena who seemed to be a bit frisky!  Overally she was fine (just liked to stop and nibble anything in her way - we were probably well matched actually).

Very relaxing ride.  My fella's not ridden and he really enjoyed it too.  Did feel a bit saddle sore the next day though!

Was one of the highlights of our holiday - if you think you might want to go, definitely do!  I felt safe, looked after (despite Xena offroading to various bushes to nibble every now and then!) and thought the horses looked happy and well.

Blue Caves and Shipwreck Cruise - (Zante Excursions)

Laura

I guess you have to visit the shipwreck, right?  Was an OK excursion, but felt very very long and I just wanted to get back by the end of it. Was average I'd say - wasn't particularly impressed by the blue caves (ones in Kefalonia are much better!).

Zakynthos Airport - (Places to Visit in Zante)

Laura

Just got back and how I laughed when I saw you could rate this as a place to visit!!! (still chuckling now).  It's like one of Dante's circles of hell....
Overcrowded, loos like something out of an old Eastern bloc country, crap duty free and just look up at the ceiling when you're there - looks like its been burnt out.
No wonder your reps warn you!!!

Dannys Kali Pigi Hotel - (Accommodation in Alykanas)

Laura

Hi - we want to go to The White House Studios in Alykanas but can't book as although in the First Choice brochures, there seems to be a problem with contracts.

Does anyone know where I can book for Ionnis and Danny's?  Is it similar to The White House does anyone know (that's really near beach and relatively quiet but also fun)?

Is I and D near to beach?  Does it have A/C?  Thanks!

Whitehouse Studios - (Accommodation in Alykanas)

Laura

Hi - I'm still trying to book the White House Studios to no avail!  First Choice rang Head Office who said they were still on 'stop sale'.  However, another agent called me today to say they seem to be available one day but not the next.  Can't find them on website either.  Nightmare!  Can anyone recommend anywhere similar in Alykanas that's near the beach, nice and cheap?!
