Paradosiako - (Restaurants in Alykes)

Richard O

The best restaraunt in Alykes/Alykanas. It gets very very busy so you need to get here early. Lovely setting, lovely food, lovely people. Hope to get her again this year but we are staying in Kalamaki this time.

Psarapoula Lemon Tree - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Richard O

We ate here twice but found different levels of food and service. 1st Time was good and 6 out of 6 meals were good , the service was good and the horse drawn carriage here was a nice touch but you do feel for the poor horse. The second time we went mine and 2 other meals were awful. Poor food and poor service, but what really put us off was whilst we were waiting for the Horse outside to go back into Alykanas we noticed a kitchen staff member feed the horse with his hand and then wonder back into the kitchen wipe his hand on a towel then contimue to prepare food. We didnt return again!!  Loveley setting though and this sort of thing probably happens all the time not just in Greece but also in the UK but we dont get to see it. Unfortunately we did see it and  it put us off.

Alykanas Resort - (Resorts in Zante)

Richard O

Alikanas/Alykes has a number of Car hire shops that will cash Travelers Cheques but the supermarkets and shops will also Cash them for you. Be warned though they will charge you commision for doing so unless you purchase something. otherwise your hotel will be able to cash them in for small charge. I would suggest taking mainly cash from the Uk and using a safety deposit box whilst away. Eurochange here in the Uk is very good.

The reason you cant log on all the while must be down to your Computer because I get in every day without any probs. We have stayed here twice and really enjoyed it. The best place to eat is the Paradasiako on the road between Alykes and Alikanas a superb restaraunt offering great greek and other specialities. Its a lovely setting and a nice walk too. Its opposite a place called the pie shack next to the river but avoid that place at all cost.

Marelen Hotel - (Accommodation in Kalamaki)

Richard O

We emailed the hotel direct and they charge 15 euros per 5 kilos of washing. They send it out apparently. There is probably a launderette in resort though as there usually is.

Zakanthi - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

Richard O

We got back on 28th June 2006 This restaurant looked fabuolous from the outside beautiful garden surroundings and a very greek authentic setting. We expected it to be expensive and it was, but we wouldnt have minded that if it was good. However it was by far the worst meal we had whilst in Kalamaki for 2 weeks. the service was appaling they were so un organised it took us what seemed like 1/2 hour to even get asked which drinks we would like. When the food finally arrived it was un edible. Looking around a lot of people just left it on their plates. AVOID AT ALL COSTS even though you will be tempted with the setting.

Marelen Hotel - (Accommodation in Kalamaki)

Richard O

We have recently returned form a stay in this hotel (28th june 2006) and I dont understand the comments about this hotel. Peoples standards must be very low. Firstly the hotel is in a good location for the beach but its a long walk to the resort especially in the heat. The rooms are tiny and you can barely swing a cat in them. And they were filthy dirty. It appears that they tend to clean around things as under our bed and in the crevices of the bed frame was filthy and disgusting. The breakfast was very poor and repetitive and involved queing for 1/2 hour to use the slowest toaster in the world. No fresh juice just diluted cordial and lots of things like jelly and blamange that no reasonable parent would want their kids to eat for breakfast. The coffee was also shocking and so watery that you may as well drink water. The snack bar wasnt much better and we ate there only because it was such a walk to go anywhere else to get anything. The reception staff were always miserable and could barely raise a smile. However the guys running the bar were at least friendly.

We did have a great time in Kalamaki but it was largely down to the weather and after a long walk to the resort centre it was quite good too. It was not down to the Marelen Hotel. The only good thing to say about it was the the pool area was lovely.

Just in case people start saying that this is what you get in Greece, I would also like to say I have been to Zante twice before and other greek islands 7 times before and the cleanliness and standard of the rooms have been far far far better than this.

Buon Amici - (Restaurants in Kalamaki)

Richard O

we ate here twice the first time was excellent both service and meal the second was very poor both service and meal my wife had a block of parmesan dropped on her shoulder and hit bruised her badly although the waitress apologised it capped off a very poor second meal. everything was overcooked and the wine was warm. What was strange was we both had the same meal on both occasions.

Black Pearl - (Bars in Kalamaki)

Richard O

What a fab place to chill out at the end of a hot sunny day and a good meal. Maria worked so hard all night. My wife sampled almost every cocktail. They were fab and frequently brought out free shots to us. Also maria gave us a free cocktail and drink on our last night how many others would do that havimg taken our money all week. Good luck Maria and Spiros maybe we will see you again next year.
