Zakfari Jeep Safari - (Zante Excursions)

Sophie D  (01 July 2005)

Superior Biscuit Day (21.06.2005).

The Zakfari was absolutely fantastic: The highlight of our holiday (especially as we were staying in Amoudi, where there is nothing to do!).  Paul was our driver, and he really knows his stuff, except that he supports Luton!  (Easy 6 points for the Owls next season!).  Zakfari is definitely worth doing and we'll recommend it to anyone who goes to Zante in future, but I'd advise you girlies to take a hair brush as I looked like Worzel Gummage afterwards with my hair full of dust!
Thank you from us both for a great day out.
Sophie and Darrell.

Amoudi Resort - (Resorts in Zante)

Sophie D

We visited Amoudi for 2 weeks, between 12 and 26 June 2005.

The people are all really friendly and it's a really beautiful resort, but I'm afraid that's about it.  There just isn't anything to do in the resort itself, and nightlife is almost non-existent.  There are only 2 bars in Amoudi itself, and both are very quiet.  A couple of times, we went down to Alykanas for a night out.  Andreas at the Clear Horizon Hotel was happy to order us a taxi to take us there, which was very nice of him, but we couldn't get one back from Alykanas to Amoudi, and were forced to do the 30 minute walk in the dark, drunk, and with no comfy shoes!
We tried the "Fish and Grill" taverna one night (the rep said it was nice), but they said we couldn't have souvlaki because it would take too long for the grill to warm up....a grill restaurant with no grilled food!  We had to have meatballs in grease instead.

Day trip to Olympia - (Zante Excursions)

Sophie D

We did the Olympia trip on 18 June 2005.

We booked the trip via our Direct Greece rep.  As per previous comments we were very annoyed when, having paid 40 euros each to go on a trip which, on the sheet provided by the rep, said "visit the ancient site of Olympia and its Museum", we were told on the coach just before we got there that we had to pay another 9 euros each to actually get into the site and museum.  The guide on the coach asked who knew about the charge, and only half of the people on the trip said that their rep had told them that there was an extra charge.
The taverna recommended by the guide when you leave the site is overpriced and has only a small selection on the menu, so we ate elsewhere.
We got too much free time in the village itself: all the shops are the same.
On the way back, they were very disorganised with the coaches.  We were told to get on a coach full of old Greek women, who said "no, no" and shook their heads at us, but the driver insisted it was the right one, so we put our heads down and snook to the back of the coach.  We had a long tour all the way round the harbour as we dropped the old people off, then we pulled into a garage where the driver filled up with petrol and washed the windscreen.
All in all, the site of Olympia is "worth seeing but not worth going to see", and the trip is definitely not worth 49 euros per person, and if we had been told about the extra 9 euro charge before we booked the trip, we probably would not have gone.

Clear Horizon - (Accommodation in Amoudi)

Sophie D

We didn't stay in the Clear Horizon Hotel, but we did go in a few times for something to eat and a few drinks, and I just wanted to say that Andreas and all the people who work there are really, really friendly.

Kozanos Hotel - (Accommodation in Amoudi)

Sophie D

Visited Amoudi between 12 and 26 June 2005, staying in the Kozanos Hotel across from the Camelot bar.

Rooms are basic and you don't get much to self-cater with: take a kettle, and a bottle opener if you're going to need one!
Get all the mosquito repellent you can get your hands on - they are really evil.  I had one very illusive one terrorising me for 2 days.  Now whenever I hear anything that sounds like NEEEEEE I get very frightened!
We had to tell the rep that we wanted our bins emptying, as nothing was done for the first 4 days.  Similarly towards the end of the holiday: the bins were overflowing by the time we left (which isn't very nice when you consider what goes in the one in the bathroom).

Neraida - (Restaurants in Alykanas)

Sophie D

We only went to the Neraida once, as we wanted to try as many places as we could, but it beat all the other places hands down.

Great selection of food, and the meals were a good quantity, great quality and very reasonable price.  We got a free plate of watermelon and a half kilo of wine!
If we ever go back to Zante, we'll definitely eat at Naraida more often.

Toms Place - (Restaurants in Alykes)

Sophie D  (01 July 2005)

We were staying in Amoudi, so we only went to Tom's Place once.

Having walked down from Amoudi, through Alykanas, we were starving and very thirsty.  We both had a full English breakfast, which is served with juice, toast and a big mug of coffee.
Then the main meal came . . . WOW!  MASSIVE plate full of excellently cooked food (and we didn't even have to choose between beans and tomatoes - you get both!).
You may think that it seems a bit more expensive for the breakfast here, at 5.50 euros but for what you get, and the quality of it, it's definitely worth it.
THE BEST BREAKFAST ON THE ISLAND (and better than most you get in cafes back in England too).
Top class.
