Kalamaki Beach - (Beaches in Zante)

Terry W

Laganas is a small beach, hard packed sand and in average condition. Kalamaki Beach is an absolute disgrace, strewn with litter ie poly bags, bottles, tins, and cigarette butts all over the beach. Its a long beach, if you feel like walking to nowhere. The end of Kalamaki beach has been known to have nudists on it however some people take offence if you whip them off. Don't bother to climb the hill to reach the small beach at the extreme left of Kalamaki Beach as you have to walk through a field of thistles - ouch- and you will be hugely disappointed when you get there because the beach is covered in 'dried sea grass'. People do try a visit but they never visit it a second time.

Returned 26 May 2005. Stayed at the Alexander Hotel. Anyone want more information of Zante - I hired a car for 3 days ----its well worth it.   Terry56oxford@yahoo.co.uk

Kalamaki Beach - (Beaches in Zante)

Terry W

Returned from Laganas on 26 May 2005 after staying 14 nights at the Alexander Hotel. The hotel mostly have people who fly in from Manchester and Glasgow. The hotel is a large one as its been extended, this means there's a lot of noise from people getting to bed , up to 4 am in the mornings and if you are a light sleeper -- just pray you will be there for 7 days. Laganas is a real rip off resort as most of the holiday makers are from Britain. Meals and drinks are expensive -- the resturants and bars are making huge profits from us. Currency exchange is best by changing your English pounds to Euro's in Laganas. On the main street , I got 1.42 for a £1 , no commission --- Thomas Cook gave me 1.38 before I travelled. Average Euro exchange is 1.41 in Laganas. The beach at laganas is good but the sand is hard packed yet it is clean. Kalamaki Beach is a nightmare, litter is strewn over the long beach, bottles, cans, poly bags and millions of cigarette ends. Be careful if you have children. Kalamaki Beach is long but theres hardly any hotels or snack bars and if anyone is hurt --you could be waiting a long time for assistance. Don't bother with the excursions especially the boat trip 'around' the island --- they always say the sea is rough and they have to return -- even though the sea at Laganas is like a millpond. i haven't met anyone who has gone round the island yet. Nudist sunbathing at the end of Kalamaki Beach is a dead loss as the beach is strewn with dried sea grass and to get to it you have to walk into the sea to round some rocks -- careful there is a tide. Alternative route is climbing a hill, walk through a large thistle field - ouch- and the path down to the beach is for landrovers - though scooters have got there. Once seen you will never go back.Take a car hire, I did for 3 days and the rates are very good. when you see the other beaches on Zante, particularily Alikanas and Tzvili its brilliant. Keri is a lovely port and the swimming in clear water was great - nice for kids as well. Banana Beach is a waste of time - a real banana skin.
