The food here was very good but it felt like you were eating in a bar. Definatly not the place to go for a romantic meal with your girlfriend would be fine if you are going out on the lash.

Hey guys just thought id post a little comment.. missing Mermaids grub it has to be said it is the bestfood I have tasted.. Massive portions, excellent and friendly staff, and the best appearance of food ever.  Here is a picture of my boyfriend with the biggest and most delicious mixed grill on the island.. it was well worth the money.. Even though he couldnt eat it all he enjoyed it very much!

Angela T  (29 September 2006)

We went to Mermaids twice during our week, once for a breakfast I had an omelette which was lovely & my husband & son had English breakfasts. They said they were nice but nothing spectacular. Also the waiters were very straight faced in the morning. We also went one evening very busy about 8.00 pm.We had two pizzas & chips between the three of us.Im glad we didnt have 3 as they were HUGE.They were as good as any Pizza Hut offering, deep pan, lots of toppings, thick cheese & less than £5 each. The staff were much friendlier aswell

Jo U  (29 September 2006)

I agree. We didn't enjoy the experience at all. Food not good at all too much fuss on the plate and far too british for our liking! Ok if you like to watch SKY TV whilst eating and being served by English waitresses and drinking pints of John Smiths, but for that you may as well stay at home!

Mark R  (27 September 2006)

After reading all the hype and walking past the place we thought we would give it a try, maybe we should have gone earlier, it was very busy even though it was only 8pm.

After being shown to a table and eventually ordering, the food arrived which was very well presented on big glass plates but was a bit overkill for the portion size. The food was tasty, no problems, it just seemed the place was too big for the staff to cope with its popularity.
Worth a visit to experience it for yourself, but go early!

What can i say about Mermaids, the food i think is fantastic. And the staff are so nice, you really look forward to going back never mind just for the food. I am going back there on October 11th (2006), and  i know that Mermaids will be the first place i go, for my meal. I just hope it's still open as it will almost be the end of the season. Looking forward to seeing Con, his wife, and all the staff again.

See you soon

Claire H  (12 September 2006)

How big are the plates at this place?! My Boyfriend got the mixed grill, we thought it was a bit pricey at 22euro but when it come out it was well woth the money! meat meat and more meat piled up on a massive plate, along with some tatey wedges aswell .... we had to wait a while for the meals but it was really busy both times we went in so what else can u expect ...... well worth the money, deffo recommend this restaurant!

Kathleen M  (21 August 2006)

Mermaids was a favourite of ours!  The food was great and the variety of dishes makes it a perfect choice for the whole family - there's something to suit everyones taste!  The service was excellent and there's a fab atmosphere too! It was great to have a choice of chips, jacket, mash, roast potatos or garlic roast potatos.  Try the Zakynthian Lamb Hotpot - it was my first and, as I loved it so much, my last dinner there!

Sally W  (19 August 2006)

we visited in july and set out on a mission to find mermaids.......... we had heard so many good things about the place and we wern't dissapointed. food was fab  u could eat there for 6 months and not get through the menu. but the food wasn't the real reason for visiting. our daughter stacey works there.all of the staff work really hard to make sure everyone enjoys the mermaid experience. love to everyone there but most of all stacey and gemma love and miss u both  x x x x x

Laura O  (15 August 2006)

We read lots of good reports about mermaids on here before travelling so we visited the restaurant. Atmosphere was good and was busy and food is presented well, the starters were lovely (and hot) however first time we visited the main meal was cold. We decided to give it a second chance after reading all the reports on her however it was cold agian. Very poor. Oh and it took ages to arrive by the way!!

Christine R  (10 August 2006)

The food in Mermaids is exceellent, which cannot be denied. I, however found the atmosphere not to be particularly condusice to eating and relaxing. The music was way too loud and at one point, we had to request it was turned down to even hear each other. The tables are packed in too tightly, leaving you with a feeling of being just another table. We were treated to a hypnotists show while we were eating, which would have been okay in a bar but why on earth would you do it in a restaurant. For those that do like this place, I would recommend the stuffed lamb and the prawn saganaki. As I said, the food was good, shame about the rest!

Christine A  (08 August 2006)

Good but not great, they do what they do here very well, if your in a mixed age party particularly with younger ones then you can't go wrong here, huge menu, buzzing atmosphere, big plates, good food and reasonably priced, if you prefer something a bit more intimate then maybe this isn't the place for you, i personally found it a bit claustrophobic and noisy, but the food was good and the service too. tried it once and that was enough for me but it was busy every time i passed so they must please a lot of people.

Michael C  (07 August 2006)

We found Mermaids early into our visit. What a brilliant place to eat. The menu is extensive, good value for money and staff friendly and helpful. Thanks Adele for the bread and butter pudding it was scrumptious.

Paul S  (07 August 2006)

Group 6 - Table 6

WOW - Had a great time here.  Food was absolutely fantastic and the staff and service were second to none.  Atmosphere is great and we cant recommend Mermaids highly enough.  The menu is extensive and has something for everyone and, if you need a slight change to a particular dish, they are more than happy to accommodate you where possible.

We made Mermaids part of our daily routine and as a result got to know the people here and can honesty say they are very professional and have the highest standards yet they are approachable and extremely friendly.  Great Staff, Service, Food and atmosphere - what more could you want.

Visit Mermaids and I guarantee you'll go back.
Miss it and MISS OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adelle N  (01 August 2006)

hya to con, yannis, and to all the rest of you's thankyou for making are food it was great and nice. u all made sure we had enough to eat the food was really nice and for any one who is going on holiday there mermaids is the place too eat. well i am going to come back next year and i will be eating there every night so see you all soon xx

Kate   (01 August 2006)

Been visiting Kalamaki for 5 years now.  Mermaids used to give a good meal...not any longer! During my last visit, my son had surf and turf for 15 euros.  The steak was very small and only three pieces of scampi!!!  All our meals were very small and poor value, they have cut down on staff so the wait for your meal is a long time.

Becky C  (30 July 2006)

hi to con and all the staff, its becky here natalie's friend, i came over to zante start of july and u gave us a free bottle of wine- remember, was so kind of u. Well if all goes 2 plan im coming back for a week end september and can't wait. I know where i'll be coming for some food!!!

see you soon x x x becky  x x x

Sarah A  (28 July 2006)

If your stayin in kalamaki u must go 2 mermaids, the food ids brilliant , massive portions but lovely. Would strongly recommend a visit to mermaids, u won't be dissapointed!!! See u next year guys

most thanks go to con and adelle for there friendly service and for giving us lots of memories!! thanks guys!!!!

Martine M  (21 July 2006)

Well what can i say.....ate here a few times and food was absolutely fantastic, massive portions, had grilled chicken and the plate was nearly the size of the table, couldn't eat it all which was disappointing. Even though the place was always busy Con manages to make sure you are not waiting around too long to be seated and makes you feel welcome as do all the staff.

Thank you so much.

Anthony M  (11 July 2006)

Mermaids was great. Great food, great service, good prices, a great menu with something for everyones taste.

Ate there 6 nights and it just got better and better.

Andrew G  (11 July 2006)

been to kalamaki the last two years and just come back and looking out of my office window  wishing i was still out there sat in mermaids having one of the wonderful meals they have to offer. i was spoilt for choice everynight and tried a variety of dishes and can say i loved them all, ranging from the steaks, chicken to wraps and pizza. what ever you want they will more than likely have. the service was always friendly and since me and my girlfriend gemma went 13 nights out 14 this holiday we got to know the staff and they will always do there best to make your experience at mermaids the best  . they certainly did for gem and i and we'll be going back next year.

missing you already.

mermaids we both love ya andrew & gem xx

Mel S  (10 July 2006)

Ate here a few times during our stay in Kalamki and the food was just divine, service was wonderful and considering the mess my youngest made each time, they still welcomed us back.  Worth the visit.

Jean T  (04 July 2006)

a big hello to con, adele, yiannis & all the staff, having arrived home last thursday i am already suffering withdrawal symptoms and longing for a tasty meal from mermaids. there were sixteen of us spending a week in kalamaki with a further two whose holiday overlapped ours for the first three days. con managed to seat thirteen of us at one table one evening, which probably lost him customers as he had to save tables, but he always tries so hard to please and anyway we did not mind waiting as we were drinking next door in plus soda. anyone going should try out the lamb kleftico, it proved to be the most popular meal amongst our group, lucy eating it on four or five occasions during our stay. we did try eating at other restaurants which were less popular and therefore you may not have to wait so long for your meal to be served (then again it must be hard to prepare & serve thirteen meals at once when you have a large full restaurant) but none compared to mermaids and this was our fifth visit to kalamaki so its not as if we haven't tried a few places. so out of sixteen of us, many who ate here most nights out of the seven that we stayed and not one complaint about food, service or price must speak volumes for mermaids. we can't wait for our next holiday there.

love to all from the essex mob !!!!!!!!!!  xxxxx

Gary E  (01 July 2006)

Fantasitic food we ate here the first night then we tried a couple of other places that just do not compete, Lady from Nottingham who was a waitress was so nice to our daughter who had a fall and cut her chin gave her a t shirt from there. you can pay anything from 5 to 25 euros for a meal but what ever you order you'll fell well fed, Had a mixed grill that cost 22.50 it could of fed the whole of zante!!!!!!!!

Laura   (23 June 2006)

hey everyone, its laura! jus wana say miss you all soo much and can't wait to see you all again!! hope everythings going well an ill c u soon.....p.s. go to mermaids is FANTASTIC!!

Jayne   (21 June 2006)

We ate here on our first night as we had heard that much about it

Its great food and presented very nice only down side gets very busy
and you are in for a bit of a wait but defo well worth it when arrives
Kids said I have to say the Chocolate fudge cake is to die for Tongue

Sarah W  (21 June 2006)

We visited Kalamaki from 11-18 May. We had been here 2 years ago but had not 'discovered' Mermaids until our 2nd to last night. We didn't make the same mistake this year and in fact made up for it by eating here for breakfast and evening meals.

If you have booked to visit Kalamaki, don't miss this place- it is FANTASTIC.

We can't say a bad word about it & find it amazing that there are comments on here that aren't full of praise. We noticed that alot of the staff were the same as they were 2 years ago & we found them to be more friendly than ever. Service is great, prices are no dearer than anywhere else, and above all, the portions are quality AND quantity.

Our thanks especially to Con and Adele who looked after us. We had our 18 month old son with us and most nights he would be asleep by the time we got to the restaurant as we were staying at the edge of the resort and was a reasonable walk (we used to sit at the bottom of the stairs near the birds nesting!) but there was the odd time when he wasn't and they couldn't have been more helpful.

Hoping to see you all in September, if not it will definitely be next year.
Hope you have a good season.

Geoff S  (20 June 2006)

Staff very friendly and nothings too much trouble. The portions are well wow, how am i supposed to eat all that. Couldn't fault it in any way, great food and staff. Thanks to all

Louise   (19 June 2006)

Thats a great pic!  The waitress in the pic was lovely, she looked after us a few times while we were in there, we got chatting and found out she went to the same school as me in the UK!!!!  What a small world!

We ate at Mermaids nearly every night of our holiday (22/5/06 to 5/6/06)  the service was excellent and the food was wonderful and beautifully presented. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and they made our evenings fun. We can't wait to go back. Our thanks and best wishes to Con and Adele and the staff, hope to see you again soon.

Picture taken on our last night.

Scott R  (14 June 2006)

What a class bar and restaurant, didnt spend much time in the restaurant but when we did it wos top class food and service! The bar (plus soda) next door is awesome, with mostly british staff and brilliant service. Got very drunk there, very often! thanks to paula(legend), con, gemma, stacey, dan the dj, paul, yannis and any one we've forgot, we will be back in august and back in the restaurant and bar! Untill Then..

Peace Out

Sarah A  (03 June 2006)

We came home from Kalamaki early yesterday morning after a week, which spent the majority of in Mermaids and Plus Soda (the bar owned by Mermaids next door). It is by far the best place to go in Kalamaki. The portions are HUGE and the starters are like a main course!  The place was packed out every night and they had to make up new tables occasionally to fit everyone in.

Although we were B&B at our hotel we ate breakfast every morning at Mermaids, which were lovely, as was the waiter who's name we didn't know, he would do anything to make you feel welcome and was always running around!

We also had our tea there every night and the staff were more than welcoming. The waitresses were so friendly, thanks to the waitress with short dark hair (possibly called Adele?!) as she was lovely and very friendly. Each night we had a starter, main course and desert with around three drinks each, this only came to about 55 Euros for the both of us, VERY good value for money for the huge portions. We would reccommend any starter with mushrooms, the steaks and banoffee pie!

The people here really take care of you and on numerous times we got free drinks. There was a hypnotist there one night which was hilarious and I think is on every Saturday night.

Thanks to everyone who worked there, especially the two breakfast guys who took care of us every morning. Also to the boss Con, the waitresses and the lads who cleaned up and rushed around everywhere!

We were sad to leave Mermaids and Plus Soda on the last night  but we hope to see you all again in September and shall be there every morning, tea time and night!

Thanks!
Sarah and Brendan (the young couple, girl with long blonde hair and lad with short blonde hair, usually table 33 unless it was taken!)

Patricia S  (02 June 2006)

Table No.35

It was the first time in greece for me, and I went with my parents who had been here 3 times before.  The food was excellent as was the service, and the staff were very helpful and polite. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody who likes eating very good authentic greek food.

I cannot wait to come back to Kalamaki and eat in this restaurant again!!!

Crow D  (26 May 2006)

Gordon Ramsay may want to take a look at mermaids, but only to learn a lesson or two.

During my time out here (I'm working out here for a car hire firm) I've made a point of sampling most of the restaurants on the strip and Mermaids has consitently been my preferred choice. Great food, massive choice, fantastic service that was polite, friendly and efficient.

Steaks in particular were to die for, and I'd heartily reccomend the bbq ribs, but whatever you choose I can't see you being disappointed.

Stephen V  (26 May 2006)

We liked Mermaids 2 years ago, but this time found things weren't as good. The staff are still very friendly in the main, but we didn't enjoy our meals as much. The quality wasn't the same overall by previous standards. Needs Gordon Ramsay to heavily prune the menu a bit in my opinion.

Alan J  (16 May 2006)

Just got back from kalamaki, my 1st time out there and it was gr8. Had food in mermaid every nite, it was that good. Service was excellent and atmosphere was very friendly. Bar next door, plus soda, had same people working there and lots of free shots came our way!

Allie L  (15 May 2006)

Lovely food and nice atmosphere the beef fillet stroganoff was to die for. Was a problem with a few of the waiting on staff not speaking english and they got terribly confused when my dad asked where the toilet was!

Rebecca R  (14 May 2006)

We have been to this island and resort many times.  Love the Mermaids, the food, the people.  They are kind, friendly and alwyas do there best to help.  If you want a big meal, value for money we highly recommend this lovely restaurant.  With us now having a disbaled member of out family we find this restaurnat accessable and are looking forward to eating there again next year  (you hear that con -we're coming back!!). I have my 16th and 18th birthday meals in there and are looking forward to having my 20th in there too  (i want a chocolate torte for my 20th next year on the 14th of august one table for 5)!!

Hi

We came to Kalamaki in the summer and discoved Mermaids far too late! The food was to die for, and such good value for money. The service was excellent, and the waiters were all cuties.
After eating here we didn´t want to eat anywhere else as it had such a fabulous menu and atmosphere.
We would all highly recommend this place & will definitely come here again next time we are on the island.

Thank you for the food and the fab greek nights!

Con, I'm good thanks, how are you? It was my pleasure keeping you up at Soda, whilst polishing off the baileys! I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Rocky will not be joining Leah & I next year, as she is destined for Italy.

I'm off in January to my next destination, but I will be back in Zante in April. Enjoy your rest, and I can't wait to see you all next year.

Yiasou!

I can't understand how anyone can not like Mermaids! It is most definitely one of the best restaurants in Kalamaki! The staff are fab (and all gorgeous), and soon get to learn what you do and don't like - eh Lefteris?!
I miss all the staff, and especially the food. I can definitely recommend the breakfasts and the vegetarian options, as no other restaurant has such a wide choice.
All in all a huge thanks to you guys for keeping me well fed this summer, and roll on next season!

Luv you all.

As i said honey i didnt mean to offend anyone and to be honest didnt look at the date when the message was posted i apologise if i have upset you pal but all i can say is sorry and yes the site is both for good and bad comments so i respect your views - i am not on here to argue with anyone so if you dont mind i have said my apologies and i wil leave it at that ...........

Heather   (13 October 2005)

i just want to add how fantastic the staff at mermaids / plus soda really are!!! they not only provide excellent service, food and prices but also the after service is outstanding!!! you could go to every other restaurant / bar  in kalamaki and struggle sometimes for them to even remember your face.. but to get home over a month ago doh!!! and to be sent emails asking how i am etc is just amazing!!! i am sure other past holiday makers will know what i mean as i am sure the staff keep in touch with so many of their customers as i dont even think that those who work at mermaids think of us as just customers we are more like friends!!!

so mermaids and plus soda get my top vote every time!! and everything about these places and the people especially is 100%

well done con keep up the good work - and to all of your staff!!!

Anthony   (28 September 2005)

Great food! The menu is like an Argos catalogue. They do all kinds of food and all of it was great. We especially liked the breakfasts, they have a great range and something to suit everyone. The service we recieved was excellent. We will definately be going back again.

Andrew S  (27 September 2005)

Excellent food (and plenty of it !!!) at a good price.  The guy meeting and greeting was brilliant but as for other staff................. One day we had been to Kefalonia and couldn't be bothered getting changed and coming back out so I called for a takeaway pizza while my wife returned to our apartment.

While I was witing at the bar, a rather largely built lady left the restaurant for a few minutes and then returned.  One of the waitresses, a young Greek girl from the look of her, turned to a colleague and in my earshot (and others ?) said "its not hard to see who ate all the pies is it ?" to the amusement of her colleague.

Not very professional and not what the place deserved , unfortunately, I did not at the time think to remind the young lady that it was people like that young lady who pay her wages.

Catherine W  (24 September 2005)

Food and service were good but failed to notice the TV screen beforehand.  This is not what we come to Greece for so our first visit was our last.

Katie H  (22 September 2005)

i have just bein reading the comments from helen!!!  I argree you go to greece to eat greek food and Mermaids do greek food, but about the mash YOUR NOT GOING TO GREECE TO FIND A ENGLISH CHEIF, maybe this is the way they make there mash, I can assure u it isnt instant mash i have eaten it several times and i no the difference. I also agree that the sight is there for your comments but i think you have shared them enough we all no your a fussy eater n dnt like instant mash get over it everyone has a bad experience on holiday and that was yours. You may have bein to plenty of other resturants while in zante but i cant find anymore that you might have mentioned!!!!!     I no the boss very well and he takes every comment on board so dnt slag the resturant off anymore im sure he has tried to change the things people are putting on here.

Lesley B  (14 September 2005)

had lots of great meals here, eat out every night, different places mostly, but a few we return to more than once, mermaids is one of them, never had a problem, ever!  this year, amongst other things, we had the lamb with cranberries which was lovely, the moussaka which was excellent, my husband had the bread and butter pudding, which he said would give his mums a run for its money, (high praise indeed) liked the house wine, had breakfast here a couple of times, which were good too, always good!  found the prices very reasonable, never felt rushed, thanks guys.

Cm M  (13 September 2005)

Thanks Nat and im sure no one has tried our food more than yourself as we served you at least 130 times last year  we are gonna miss one of the best reps we had come back darling.

Karen M  (13 September 2005)

we tried mermaids after reading all the hype on this website. sorry guys but we thought it was overated, we much prefered the parthenon opposite, much more relaxed, friendly and we didn't feel rushed all the time.

Natalie P  (13 September 2005)

Louise T  (11 September 2005)

Not up to scratch at all the food was ok but the staff were far to pushy and it took them 7 attempts to work out the bill after over charging us 27 euro's sorry mermaids but you wont be getting our custom next year

Sarah G  (10 September 2005)

Im afraid ive got to agree with the folks that didnt enjoy the meals there. We thought we'd try somewhere different for breakfast  - and we werent very impressed! Never again!

But as someone said - everyone is different!

Louise W  (09 September 2005)

hey. came to kalamaki this time last year and just gettin ready to head back out there for a week this sunday. i went with two friends last year and one of the things that made our holiday so great was mermaids and plus soda. the staff are really friendly and were always ready to help, with the food being ab gorg (lookin forward to my first zakynthian hotpot with mash potato!) and reasonably priced. reading the comments from this year we never had any problms being rushed or with the quality of the food. i would reccomend mermaids to anyone, we'll definielty be avin our first meal there on sunday. x

Denise G  (09 September 2005)

We have been to Kalamaki 6 times in the last 3 years of which the last 4 times after trying most of the restaurants on the island we ate at mermaids every night, 2 adults and 2 kids, plates clean every time. The staff had time for us and were all polite (which goes far in my opinion). Please can you make sure that the pool table is up and running for next year !!!!!

Thomas M  (08 September 2005)

I think people on this website should remember that you are always going to get people who moan no matter how good something is, and to respect their opinions.

I personally returned from Kalamaki just this Monday, and I think the fact we ate at the Mermaids 3 times speaks for itself. What a superb place, The Greek Meatballs were just fantastic, and unfortunately, I couldnt resist having them twice! I also had the Chicken with BBQ sauce, bacon and chesse, and this was just perfectly cooked, and tasted wonderful. I also love the way everything is presented, the plates they use are just so fancy!

Regarding been rushed, we were never rushed, despite the place been absolutely chokka everytime we visited, and I think people should respect that a restaurant as good and popular as this is going to become full, we helped them out by finishing our drinks in the Club Soda next door, which also had very friendly staff.

The person moaning about what was discussed at nearby tables made me laugh, what are the staff supposed to about it? Come on!

Overall a fantastic restaurant, and a fantastic holiday.

Steven L  (07 September 2005)

Had a drink here one evening, really nice staff.

just got back from kalamaki, got to say it was the best holiday ever!! mainly down to mermaids and plus soda!! mermaids is the perfect place to be for great food and friendly service! i was there with a party of 19 and mermaids never had trouble getting us in! we all enjoyed our meals (although if u go i would advise not to have a starter or to share one they are massive!!) it was reasonable money! and we had a laugh with the staff!! we wil lbe coming back next year so see you all then!!

ps, go to plus soda for a couple of drinks after! same again great staff and good service the cocktails are yummy!! missin you all see you next year!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
the pic is of some of the "holiday crew" but a few of us were already in plus soda by this time!!

Helen K  (05 September 2005)

Chris,

Mark D has a point. I didnt have anything against the owners of the restaurant, i just didnt like the food. Everyone has different tastes mate, give me a break!!!!!! I doubt you liked everywhere i went but im not going to keep putting posts on here going on at you cos i think you are wrong!! This site was put here sothat people can put across their view about kalamaki, good or bad!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul J  (04 September 2005)

Awful AwfulAwful is all i have to say!

Emily F  (04 September 2005)

We went to mermaids for an evening meal and although the food seemed far more expensive than anywhere else we had been decided it was down to quality. We were sadly mistaken! We both had fish and quite honestly the was off overcooked steak. The potatoes (advertised as mashed) tasted as if they had been made with an instant powder and the "vegetables" were clearly from a tin! I would not recommend this restaurant!

G H  (03 September 2005)

Wen to Mermaids one night, as usual very busy, but by the time we ordred a drink at the bar, we had a table!  Decided not to have starters, as we knew the portion sizes are massive.  Hubby had steak, he said very tender but a bit bland.  I had a chicken wrap, which was lovely, but couldnt finish it all!  Mermaids is slightly more expensive than other resturants we ate, but the plateful you get is huge.  One complaint thou, hubby had an ouzo and lemonade - it was €3.50!  the supermarkets sell a bottle of ouzo for that price - this was the higgest price he paid and he said he wouldnt give them the money again for it.....

Also went once for brekkie, just had butties and they were very nice.

The staff are very nice and took time to chat even thou very busy.

Mark D  (02 September 2005)

FAO Chris C

Chris mate...people are allowed to post their opinions, regardless of whether you think they have vendettas. Do you actually work for Mermaids or something ?? Every time there is a bad post one here about Mermaids do you feel that you have to stand up and tell everyone how wrong they must be?? Yes, we know you like the place and you have defended it enough times for everyone to see that. I put my opinion on here and Con asked me to e-mail him as he felt it would be probably be constructive.I did e-mail him and it proved that he does care about genuine criticism of his restaurant. He obviously does not care about what these other people think, so just let them get on with it. If it doesn't bother the owner then why should it bother someone like you who doesn't even work there. Don't take it personally. Its not directed at you.Wink

Chris C  (02 September 2005)

I think helen Kinch has made her point often enough, so Helen, where did you eat in Greece that you liked apart from Daisys. you seem to have a vendetta on Mermaids

Helen K  (01 September 2005)

hi denise,

just read your comments and your totally right. i go to greece to eat greek food. i dont expect instant mash potatoe so cm can you please take note of that cos i couldnt eat it!!!!!!!!

Mark D  (01 September 2005)

I  feel that I should advise everyone that my issue with Mermaids was not with the menu or the price etc (In fact the menu from Mermaids was probably the largest and one of the most reasonably priced in Kalamaki). My issue was that we felt hurried whilst eating our meal to make way for other customers. I have e-mailed Con (the owner) and he sounds a really nice, genuine man. He told me that if I visit Kalamaki again, I have to call to Mermaids and ask for him, so that we can get the best available treatment. This sounds like a man who cares about his customers and takes onboard any issues that they have with his restaurant. I will hopefully (funds permitting) be able to take up his offer in the future, but I just thought that I should let everyone know about this gesture and advise everyone that it may have been a one off that I was unlucky to have experienced Clap Clap Smile

Cm M  (01 September 2005)

Im sorry Mark for your experience in mermaids im sure the doorman miri would never make anyone feel uncomfortable while they eat infact we want people too stay and have as many drinks and desserts as they like we do not rush anyone and never have i felt it was time to reply to some comments as i feel they are over the top.I respect any comments good or bad but my staff are fully trained and have been for many years in mermaids they respect and appriciate customers choosing our great restaurant we try the hardest to please everyone but that is not possible in a real world no one can be 100 percent.Your rep in the first case should never reccomend a restaurant or bar its against company policy so that is something wrong there.secondly if there where 3 of you mark and near the door way thats table 18 it fits 3 people at the most 4.a party of people it will not take.many people que outside too come in and have a meal its the doormans job to tell the people how long it will be and too know if any bills have gone out so he can tell them the waiting time miris job is a very hard one as he deals with a big waiting list and will not want people to wait longer than they have to.If you could tell me mark what you had to eat and what you thought about it it would help us here make things even better we have a strict policy if you dont like it we change it for you there are well over 300 dishes and we try too make everything as delicious as our kitchen staff and head chef can.please feel free too email me with any concerns or advice and yes i do take everything on board because we take pride in what we do and we wnat to do it better.my email mark is zakinthian@hotmail.com  thankyou for your comments please email me.

Mark D  (31 August 2005)

Just back from Kalamkaki on Sunday and having been reading other views on this place I decided to try it for myself. I was advised by my rep that it was overrated, but I went along anyway to try for myself. Overrated is a compliment for this place. There were 3 of us sat right at the entrance, the meal itself was ok, but the final straw came when a party outside where trying to get a table,we overheard the waiter saying that our table should be finished soon. We were still eating our meal at the time and were planning on ordering some more drinks..I know the owner checks this site and hopefully he takes my comments on board .Please advise your staff to let people enjoy their meals and let them decide when its time to go rather than making it feel like McDonalds.

Denise G  (31 August 2005)

Hi Tracy and Helen

Glad to hear i wasnt the only one, Alex i love greece and love greek food, not once did i eat pie and chips, fish and chips etc, in fact chips only featured on my menu twice and once came with my mermaids meal, i dont want to knock mermaids everything is different people tastes, but i wanted to eat greek and personally though this was very english, how many greek restuarants do hypnotist nights!!! not what i wanted but if thats what you want then fair enough

Tracy J - i am so pleased someone else didnt think Mermaids was as fantastic as everyone makes it out to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Alex- just read your comments on Mermaids. I happen to be who didn't think the food was fantastic at Mermaids and feel you may have mistaken others views. Just because everyone doesn't rave about this restaurant, does not meen that they prefer pie and chips!! In fact, we found Mermaids to be the least Greek of all the restaurants we tried!! However I am glad that you enjoyed your visits to Mermaids and Plus Soda (same owner). The Karaoke and card tricks must have been great fun-is this an ancient Greek custom??!!

Anyone who doesn't like the excellent food at Mermaids should go to somewhere average to get your sausages, chips and mushy peas or burgers and other UK style food. Mermaids is the tops, as is the food and staff, the entertainment and everything else. See you all next year.

After hearing great reviews of mermaids i was really looking forward to eating there, We ordered a special which was chicken in a pepper sauce, barbecue ribs and something else which i cant even remember, the meal arrived in 5mins which to me proved it is cooked in bulk and was ok but not exactly mind blowing! The ribs just fell apart which isnt how a rib should be the meat should have to be torn off. Only ate there the once childrens meals where great so were the puddings but our meal put us off.

We ate at Mermaids on our first night. The food and service was excellent-especially the childrens meal! We tried Mermaids again a couple of nights later, on this occasion we received a very 'hurried' service. They wanted to take our order within 2 minutes! When we did eventually receive the food it was  big disappointment. The steak was like shoe leather and was served with tinned mushrooms. We spoke to many other visitors and many had described the restaurant as 'okay'. We tried some of the restaurants at the very top of the town towards the beach.  We found these to have a much more relaxed feel and were more typically Greek. Also, you weren't grabbed on the street every 2 minutes by restaurant staff! On thw hole I suppose the Mermaid is reasonably priced but I would advise anyone to try other restaurants too.

i have just been reading someones comments about mermaids fair enough if you know the owners but it sounds like you went there every night and i just thought "how boring!!!!" i have been to plenty of places in greece and countless restaurants, and i have to admit mermaids is the only place that serves instant mash potatoe. i couldnt eat it, it was horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!

We ate here on three nights during our stay ( 5th August - 19th August ), food was great, service was OK, although trying to get the bill proved problematic, had to ask numerous times. I agree with the comment on additional staff required during the busy periods, otherwise the experience would have been great. Prices were good.

During our visit in May 2002 we ate here most nights and it was excellent all round.

Chris,

I think you missed Jamies point .  It was not about what the people were saying on the other tables, just that the tables were to close together.

14 great meals in Mermaids once again, the staff work so hard to prepare and serve you your food, you will find it ahrd to beat a top restaurant such as Mermaids.. all the staff work 110% nothing is ever to much trouble for them, and you get service with a smile!  Brilliant presentation for the meals, there was 13 of us eating together twice during our stay, and nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff great place.. Number 1 restaurant in Kalamaki in my opinion.. unlike over the road.. "voted number 1 on justzante.. " yeah where are they looking!? The meals I had include cajun chicken wrap, chicken fillet, lasagne, steak with peppercorn and stilton, and not forgetting the mixed greek platter god that was gorgeous.. oh yeah and the jacket potatoes hey con!  Breakfast here is also delicious..

All in all, a top place to go, friendly staff, service with a smile, great presentation, the only problem you may have is choosing something from Mermaids extensive menu.. soo much choice!

Thanks for a great time Con + Adele, be proud.. thanks for the cake too.. was real nice. See you all soon guys..

My advice: go to mermaids you wont be dissappointed!

I am sorry to disagree with you Terri-ann but we did not enjoy our 1 meal here. They we had to wait 20 mins when we arrived just for a drink. I ordered steak, as i do not like fish, and when my steak came it tasted of fish (apparently they are cooked on the same grill - this is the reason i was given with no apology). The waitress we had obviously did not want to be at work as our meal was literally 'thrown' on the table. We asked for the bill and haqd to wait another 20 minutes for it even though we ended up asking for it 3 times. We will never got there again.

I'm sorry but i cant understand how people can knock this restaurant, i have been going to Zante every year since 96. And everytime i'm there, Mermaids is the only place me and my family will eat. It's fantastic, the choice of food, is much more than any other place there. Including restaurants in Laganas, Argassi and etc. And the food itself is out of this world. The staff there are so nice, they help you with everything. Con and his wife, are great. This place is great, always a smile even when they are rushed off their feet. (which is everynight really)

I'm back there next year, and Mermaids is the place i'll defo be eating in.
