Just returned from a lovely week in Kalamaki, loved the resort and hope to return.  Ate out every lunch and dinner at several restaurants throughout the resort / island.  All of the restaurants we ate in e.g. Dias, Parthenon, Olive Tree, Kalamaki Beach Taverna, Michaelos were superb and excellent value, however we had one awful and expensive meal at the Zakanoh.  This restaurant tempted us in with it's setting and the owner telling us we wouldnt be disappointed.  I ordered chicken vermouth (chicken breast stuffed with smoked cheese served with a vermouth sauce) (9.5 euros) what arrived was a piece of chicken from a tin (long stringy) without a hint of cheese and what seemed to be a bit of watered down campbell's soup poured over.  My husband ordered grilled prawns (16 euros)  which were soggy and very small, all five of them on a bed of shredded lettuce, served with carrots and one florette of broccolli (over three euros a prawn - we must be daft) worse still we both had upset stomachs the following day.  I have never given a review on a hotel or restaurant before, but feel strongly enough about this to warn other people, dont eat at the Zakanoh

Jason H

the setting of this resturant is beautifull but the food is very poor!(tasted and looked like it went ping)

John M

I cannot believe this restaurant is 1-10 we ate at a number of the 10 out 10 and this place is as good as if not better than most of them.

Yes it is a bit more expensive, the service is slow and the menu is limited but this place is worth a visit for the setting alone and the food we had was very good.

Not a place to visit to often but well worth at least one visit on your holiday.

click to enlarge click to enlarge click to enlarge Certainly mixed views on this restaurant. We saved this till last and weren't disappointed. Good service, great food & lovely setting (very atmospheric at night). The only downside was the price of the wine - so we didn't have any! Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Two lovely resident cats.

Andrew E

Do not spend your money here! waited 20 minutes to get served, 1 hour for food to arrive, then another 45 minutes or so for the bill. food was over priced and did not come up to scratch at all. looks good from the outside but AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Julie S

I too cannot understand the negative comments on this restaurant.  We ate here twice and the food was excellent.  One of the nights was when the greek dancing was on and had great fun participating.  I dont think the food was exceptionally expensive.  We are three adults and one child having starter main course and wine which on average cost 50 Euros.  Approx £35 for good quality food - not expensive in my book!!!!

I cannot understand why people are slating this restaurant, it is absolutely fantastic, my only complaint would be if you are a vegetarian like me then there isn't much choice, but what I did have was delicious.  The surroundings are beautiful and the staff are lovely, particularly Marinella, she's so friendly.

I knew Jimmy the cat when he was a kitten so it is lovely to see him fully grown.

Clare H

WE WERE A PARTY OF 7.  4 ADULTS, 1 BABY 2 KIDS. SERVICE POOR, FOOD NOT UP TO STANDARD. VERY EXPENSIVE. LOOKS FAB FROM THE OUTSIDE, VERY GREEK BUT A TRICK TO GET YOU IN!!! STAY AWAY IS WHAT WE SAY!

Richard O

We got back on 28th June 2006 This restaurant looked fabuolous from the outside beautiful garden surroundings and a very greek authentic setting. We expected it to be expensive and it was, but we wouldnt have minded that if it was good. However it was by far the worst meal we had whilst in Kalamaki for 2 weeks. the service was appaling they were so un organised it took us what seemed like 1/2 hour to even get asked which drinks we would like. When the food finally arrived it was un edible. Looking around a lot of people just left it on their plates. AVOID AT ALL COSTS even though you will be tempted with the setting.

Zoe T

We had a great time here last Wednesday at their Greek night, complimentary Ouzo to start, great live Greek music and 3 dancers to entertain us. The food was really good, service was good, and it wasn't particularly expensive. think they do the Greek night every week, so worth a visit.

Marion R

Having walked past a few times, we decided to try this restaurant set in a large impressive looking garden.I had a feeling it would be good even though probably more expensive(which it was).My husband and I both ate lamb Zakynthian style, with herbs and olive oil.The lamb was very tender although I had quite a large bone in mine whereas husband seemd to fare better meat wise. However, the vegetables were fresh (unlike some places where you know they are from a packet) and we found the service friendly, but maybe a bit of a longer wait but hey, we had nothing to rush for anyway. An added bonus for any cat lovers are the two large felines named Jimmy and Martin which tend to steal the show as they are distinctly different to the usual slightly built local cats!

David B

Just returned from kalamaki we ate at the restaurant only once  and that was enough! after eating at the artemis 3 times the sight of the lovely garden to eat in certainl;y was appealing.. so we thought as a change we will give it a try.. i would say i am a VERY patient person but we waited SO long for the waiter to appear  i almost walked.  Eventually he did ..we ordered ... when it arrived we were disappointed as the "fresh veg" were frozen although the lamb was ok it did have quite a bit of fat on it. my other half had chicken which was tough.. we ended the meal with no desert and no coffee and were pleased to  get out of there and go elsewhere to finish meal..... p.s. they bring you bread whilst you wait but then  charge you for it  when the bill arives!!Big word of warning   DON'T GO IN !!!

Dawn W

Whatever you do DO NOT EAT HERE!!! It was down right blinking awful the worst meal I have EVER had in my life. We were a party of 8 when we ate here, it may look authentic and lovely from the outide but it is truly terrible. It took nearly 2 hours for main course to arrive and when it did 2 of the chicken dishes were undercooked and when we tried to send it back it fell on stony ground - no really - the rude and abrupt waiter refused!! the service the atmosphere and the quality of the food was terrible, we were not the only ones who were complaining either and every other complainee was treated with disregard. When we decided enough was enough we asked for our bill it had been on our table for about a minute when this harsh female waitress came over demanding are you ready? Obviously this was the last straw and told her where to go until we were ready to hand over good money for a terrible meal, it's expensive and not worth any penny of your hard earned money. Don't go there, really, don't! The best places to eat we found were Paris Taverna, Mermaids and Michaelos the service and food was top class and great value for money.

Tony t

i only tried this restaurant once and that was more than enough, the waiters were very abrupt,

(mafia like). when i went the food was ok but the prices were scandalous, we spoke to a couple who had dined there this year and they paid 97 euros for just a starter and their main meal, well we dine out as a group of six most evenings, but have never had to pay that much for six of us, the garden setting may look nice but its mozzy nightmare at night.

try dias or tesoro for better food and service at half the price and thats the "gods honest truth".

apart from the odd good comment on here, i have never heard a good word about it from anyone in kalamaki and to be honest i have not seen it looking busy for the last few years

Lindsey P

Its a shame because this was our favorite restrant  in 2003, But when we returned this year it wasnt the same, service is slow but so relaxing you dont always notice the timing, however it is very expensive compared to othwer restrants, the food is nice the staff seemed less friendly, they have one of the best surroundings its a shame, i will try again next year!

Marie W

The food here is good but overpriced although it is in a lovely setting. The service is dreadful we waited one hour for our main course to arrive! It cost us twice as much for our family here on our last night than we had paid for our whole 2 weeks in Kalamaki so I would not recommend it!

Louisa C

Unfortunately we only discovered this restaurant on our second week in Kalamaki. We had visited some complete duffers of restaurants before that! Zakanoh was by far our favourite restaurant! Yes it is more expensive, but we would pay more for the atmosphere alone! The potato skins with garlic dip starter was out of this world!!! We went to this restaurant 3 times overall, and each meal was faultless! My boyfriend particularly loved the greek kebab!!!
If we go back to Kalamaki, this is the ONLY place we will be eating!

Superb food - supperb suroundings and superb staff.  We ate there loads of times whilst in Kalamki and i cant think of a single fault with the place.  Fair enough it may be more expencive the the other restaurants - but which other one can offer such high quality food and stuuning suroundings.  All the waiters were so friendly and couldnt do anything else for you - one even saved my lighter that i had left and gave me it back 2 nights later - it was only one of those cheap plastic ones!!!  Highly reccomended

Chris M

Wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. Unfriendly service, poor quality food and way over-priced, there are far better places to eat in Kalamaki.

Alison K

Had local Beef steak which consisted of 60% fat & Grissle. I have never complained at a restaurant before but felt I had to. I wish I hadn't. The waiter looked so shocked and made such a fuss I felt very embarrassed and could not wait to get out the place.Maybe we went on a bad night,or not but wouldn't recommend this place. Over priced and over rated

Ryan H

We ate at this restaurant once during our two week stay as the setting of the restaurant attracted us - it looks so romantic.  However while the food was ok and the place is nice, it was probably our least favourite restaurant in Kalamaki due to the expense and the service wasnt that good, as many other reviews also comment on.  Still it is a lovely place and does have a good choice of Greek food.

Michelle B

A lovely place in a garden setting, very different from the other restaurants. Some swings at the back for the children to play on (out of sight of tables). Tables well spaced so quite romantic.

Food very good, we had pork in mustard sauce and roast lamb, nice potato wedges and vegetables. Children had homemade burgers which were lovely. Good service from friendly waiters. We went quite early and later on the waiters seemed quite stretched as the restaurant became full, saw one couple walk out as noone took their order.

Chas L

We went to Zakanoh most nights on our holiday, the food is excellent and so are the staff. They had remembered us from our stay in June and made sure we had a really good night everytime we went in with free deserts and wine!! This is the best restaurant in Kalamaki by far and I would recommend anyone who is going to Kalamaki to try it, I would just like to add there is barely any football noise from the great bar across the road !!!!

Jon H

Lovely surroundings, so removed from the town it is unbelievable, apart from the footy blaring across the road from that other horrible place with the huge screen ( and even bigger speakers by the sound of it!). Food was good, if a little more expensive than elsewhere, but woth it for the surroundings. Were going back there for our last night but was closed...

Sarah B

Unfortunatley we only decided to go here on our last nighht, what a pity as we had a superb meal! Gorgeous setting, it felt a million miles away from the main Kalamaki road.
We had mussels to start which were delicious followed by a succulent beef kebab and the vemouth chicken. Can highly recommend the house red and the banoffee pie for dessert!
The waiters were very helpful and there was no English TV in sight!! Woohoo!

After walking past this restaurant several times it was the romantic setting which attracted us to eat here. I must say though I left feeling a little disappointed. Firstly, we ordered a bottle of wine and had to ask 3 waiters where it was, 20 minutes later it finally arrived and secondly, the menu had very little choice. My partner had pate to start and Lamb platter and cous cous for main, and I had bbq ribs to start and Beef in Tomato and Basil for main, the beef was over cooked and dry but everything else was nice. This was the most expensive restaurants we ate at and we had much better meals elsewhere at half the price.

Jo T

We have eaten here every time we've been to the island and each time we remember the tables aren't level the food is average and the price is very expensive. Four of us 2 children and 2 adults ate here and the cost of the meal was 90euros, this i didn't mind paying but have had better food in other restuarants for 30-50 euros for the 4 of us. The setting is supurb and ideal for a romantic night for two but the tables and chairs were uncomfortable and i felt that value wise we've had much better.

Annie P

The best restaurant by far in Kalamaki. Service a little slow but I think that's maybe because we were used to the 'heat em up and chuck em on the table' joints by the time we had found this little gem.

Why oh why has Mermaids got the most attention when you can go for a decent meal here.

Eric S

Definately not the cheapest but by far the best. Food is freshly prepared and offers some different items to the usual. Service is maybe a bit slow but not beyond acceptable. Very good three course meal with wine was just over 60 Euro for two people.

Phil A

The food here was great - unfortunately, that's the only thing that was great. The service was pretty poor - we had to wait for a long time for our food and the waiters were a huge contrast to those we had seen at other restaurants in Kalamaki. The place didn't have the friendly vibe that every other restaurant we went to had. The price of food was high also, compared to other prices on Zante - the menu was the smallest we'd seen on the island too, and the desserts we wanted weren't available. All in all, I had a pretty crap time at Zakanoh, but Jess enjoyed the Chicken Caesar Salad, which looked great!

Ken W

The phone number for Zakanoh is: 06950 43586 plus the usual international code.

We're looking forward to returning to Zante/Kalamaki/Maralen/Zakanoh this September. My mouth is watering at the thought of sunny days, pleasant evenings and superb food all shared with the woman I love. Life doesn't get much better than this.

Ken

Matthew B

unfortunately i can't comment on the food at this restaurant, because we walked in, had a good look at the very spa**e menu and the ridiculous prices of the food and drinks and walked out.

Sinead N

We went to this restaurant on one occasion as we went to a different one each night. However this was the best restaurant in Kalamaki. The atmosphere, the location and the service was excellent. Again it was more pricey than the other restaurants, but you pay for what you get.
We spent 60 euro for our meal, which was starters, main course and a beautiful bottle of red wine. It was very romantic and the waiters were very professional and attentive. The food was cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend his restaurant to anybody staying in Kalamaki.

Mike R

We went there last night. Waited 30 minutes for our drinks then another 15 for our main course. As soon as we finished our first course our main course came, when we complained we got the ususal waffle about how busy they were, not to my mind.
The food was good, but the price was very high 15 euros more than any other meal we had had of a similar type.

Elizabeth K

Does anyone know if Tasos and his brothers still run Zakanoh in Kalamaki? If so does anyone have phone, address or both?

Doris H

Dear All

Can anybody let me know how I can get in contact with the Zakanoh REstaurant? e-mail, telephon number etc....

many thanks
Doris Hobi

Robin F

Tassos was perfect hosts, lots of very good evenings after the restaurant closed. We couldn't have had more fun anywhere on the island.

Keep it up.

Ken W

Zakanoh is unlike any other restaurant we have tried in Kalamaki during the last 3 years. Quite simply, it is a Greek restaurant that has a different appeal to any other we have tried. A restauranteur in another local eatery was quite forthcoming when he told me that the locals would go there for a special occasion. It's really that good. The food is stunning. The menu is fundamentally different to other Greek Tavernas we have visited. Everything we had was made from fresh (not tinned or frozen) ingredients, freshly cooked and exquisetley presented and served. The chocolate mousse for dessert was unbelievable, so light but not rich or sickly. Certainly the best I have ever tasted. I feel I must comment on a young waiter who looked about 15 years of age. He was perfect. It is so rare to see the quality of service and attention in one so young. Here in the UK, he would not be out of place in the sort of restaurant where you are paying £60 plus per head. Our 2 course meal and bottle of superb wine worked out at less than 30 Euros per head. A little more expensive than generally available in Kalamaki, but unbelievably good value for money. Well done Zakanoh.

Katie S

The food here is lovely the service is great, definatley one of the best restaurants in Kalamaki. A touch of class!

Danny M

By far the nicest restaurant in Kalamaki. Great setting, lovely food and friendly staff.
People always refer to the cost. It may be more expensive than most of the others, but you'd pay a lot more in England for a meal in a similar setting.
Definitely worth a visit.

Andrea W

This was one of our best restaurants in Kalamaki. If your looking for something special this is the place to go. Service was really good!
Prices are slightly more expensive than the usual restaurants, but it was definatley worth it!

Gail H

You can find every kind of restaurant. We spend most of our holiday evenings in restaurants rather than bars and have a meal with drinks so we liked the traditional taverna type restaurants and we have spent from €6 - €12 each for a meal again it depends on where you eat and what type of food you like. My problem is I like it all so had to try them all.

This was recommended to us by a group we met on the Athens trip who were also staying in our resort. I didn’t like the fact they didn’t have a menu outside to look at before we went in not because of the prices, because although they may have been slightly more expensive and I’m only talking about €2 or €3 more than anywhere else it was to see what choice they had. When we got inside we were led to the very outskirts of the restaurant, there was no one sat round us we felt out of it all, it took them ages to serve us and the menu wasn’t that great. Saying that the food when we got out meal was great.

Charo D

My boyfriend and I had a very gorgeous meal here. It is a little more expensive than the other restaurants, but you pay for what you get and the quality of food and service. The restaurant is set in beautiful gardens and is very romantic. 1st class!

David &

We went here twice, first just to try but the second time as a special meal for Rachel's birthday. Food both times was excellent. Yes it is a little more expensive than other restaurants in the resort but well worth it as the quality of food, service and atmosphere are all top-notch!

John A

I agree with other comments. Overpriced much better at Tesoro, Dias, Mermaids, Michaelo's, Parthenon etc

Ruby C

looks great from the road but dont bother .food much better elsewhere and a damn sight cheaper . service is pot.go to michaelos food excellent as is the service and the wine is only a bit dearer than the supermarkets .superb value for money .beef stiffado is incredible

Sophie L

The food may have been nice, but it was a real rip off! the setting was great with good music, it was really atmospheric but the service was really slow and the bill was really expensive. We spent more here on a basic main course and drinks than we did at any of the other restaurants where we'd bought a lot more.
Try next door, Tesoro's, it is cheaper, just as nice food and a better atmosphere.

Simon N

If you enjoy romantic evenings for two, fine dining in the UK & are prepared to pay the same prices as at home then this is the restaurant for you.
If you are a family,in a rush & on a budget probably not.
We dined twice at Zakanoh (Couple 29,30) & both times it was excellent. The atmosphere is more chilled & laid back with ambiant type music playing in the background. We found the service excellent & enjoyed the breaks between courses. The food was fantastic - I can recommend the Mussels - Whole Seabass in lemon & olive oil dressing & Duck Breast with Chilli/Ginger sauce. The Steaks were excellent as well - All courses came with choice of fresh veg - & choice of potatoes ( Homemade Chips/Mash or roast) We were impressed with this as we found most of the other restaurants let themselves down by serving the same frozen veg & potatoes with the main courses(Even Michaelos!!) The Baclava & Banoffi pie were also highlights. To cap it all off they then give you a mouth watering fresh fruit salad (Complementary) Both nights our bill came to 86 euros that was with Starters,Main,Dessert & two bottles of Chablis.
Excellent !!!

Doug B

It was rubbish in 2001 and it was rubbish again this year. A beautiful setting is very tempting but give this place a miss. The service is painfully slow and the food is overly priced. The waiters were only interested in themselves. Forget it.

Natalie H

Give this place a miss. We went on our last night of our holiday a week ago. Warning bells should have been ringing when there was no price list outside the resturant. There wa a 2 Euros cover charge per person. The drinks were exorbonite 3.5 Euro for a coke & same for a beer. Elswhere it was 1.5. The setting was good but that did not compansate for the bitter taste in my mouth that came with the rip off bill. The food was fair I had Stifado the waiter seemed to have other things on their mind. All in all not recommended. If you want a quality , friendly meal try Heros just down the road.

Lynn F

We loved it here. It was our best meal in kalamaki. It is a bit pricey but worth it. The tables are far apart and in a pretty setting. A bit different from all the other restaurants near by and you don't get chips and rice with everything!

Sarah B

Beautiful surroundings, very pricey compared to others around. Food was ok but doesn't warrant the price.

Lesley B

the food was good, as always, ok its a little more expensive but its worth it, had steak and it was cooked to perfection, strawberries and ice cream for afters.. surroundings are beautiful

Nick L

Like everyone here, I agree that the prices at this restuarant are expensive, especially the wine. We paid 20 Euros for a half decent bottle of wine. We both had the lamb which was fantastic.

For something different in fantastic settings I would certainly reccommend it here. Certainly somewhere to impress a loved one or for a special occasion.

Look out for Nikki thier feline friend !

Wayne D

We visited Zakanoh on our wedding anniversary as a special night out. It was obvious it was going to be more expensive than your average Kalamaki restaurant, but it was definitely worth it. The food was excellent and the setting just perfect for a romantic night. Yes, the service is relaxed and you'll probably spend most of the evening there, but I couldn't think of better surroundings in which to spend an evening on holiday.

Jezebel G

This is an extremely beautiful restaurant, certainly the highest class establishemnt in the resort. The menu is fairly ordinary as is the food, but the tables are set far apart from eachother in carefully landscaped gardens, and real traditional greek music occasionally features. The prices are extortionate, which is fair enough as they clearly serve far fewer people than the other mass market restaurants, but what I consider unfair is that there's no menu on display - you don't see the pricelist until you've already started work on the bread. We asked for a house wine as the winelist was way out of our budget, were given a 2 euro bottle fromthe supermarket and charged 18, jsut for the wine. you might consider the setting worth the extra money, but don't expect the menu or food to be any better than any other restaurant in the road where it will be half the price.

Amanda P

Have just returned from Kalamaki and had the best meal ever in Zakanoh. Yes, the service was slow but relaxed, as you would expect it to be. All the staff were courteous and polite. There was no menu on display at the front of the restaurant which would suggest that it would be more expensive, however the quality of the food MORE than made up for this. We visited many restaurants in Kalamaki but by the end of the holiday decided that Zakanoh was the best hands down.

Sandra P

Lovely romantic setting, food is a bit pricey compared to other restaurants, and the menu was not so extensive. However, food was excellent, and it was the only place we were given fresh vegetables with our meal.

Kat

We thought this restaurant looked really nice every time we passed it and decided to go there one night. We wished we hadn't. The service was slow and not very welcoming . Although the food was ok it was nothing special, it was expensive, the menu was not very extensive and there weren't many traditional dishes available. There are plenty of other places in Kalamaki to choose from (some of which were so good we visited them more than once) and this one didn't compare. The beautiful surroundings came nowhere near to outweighing the unfriendly service and the extortionate prices.

Jakky M

We found this place the last few days of our holiday. Beautiful romantic setting, the food was excellent, as close to home standards as you'll get in Zante. The atmosphere was laid back, so don't expect to be rushed, you're there for the whole night if you like.Certainly you may need to catch the waiter's attention but their service and manner was first class, nothing was too much trouble. We ate there 3 times in our last 4 days.Costing 50 euros, 55 euros & 88 euros. The last one was a bit dearer, but was for 2 starters, 2 steaks with sauces, 1 sweet, 1 large water and 8 Gin and Tonics. The only place I would recommend.

Rob J

lovely setting. i went to this restuarant with a group of 8 people my meal was very good but no one else was very impressed. so not worth a second visit.

Peter M

This restaurant does not have a menu outside the premises before you enter! We soon realised why when we saw the price of the drinks,5 euros for a botle of water, and the house wine at 17 euros,6 in most other restaurants. The food was good but nothing spectacular for the price. The service was not up to much either. There are far cheaper restaurants in Kalamaki serving better food. Our total bill was at least double that we paid anywhere else, 90 euros!

Craig S

Hello myself and my partner are just back from Kalamaki, Zante. We had a meal at Zakanoh, but found the outdoor lighting to be inadequate. The food was ok but nothing special. The biggest problem was the service, it was terrible and to add insult our meal cost us 40 euros. I would not recommend this eating place while you stay at Kalamaki. We found another place called "Escape", the food and service was better and it only cost 20 euros!

Debbie G

Beautiful restaurant, fabulous food, lovely surroundings. Excellent for a tasteful, romantic evening. A bit pricey but well worth it.

Anne A

Prices were expensive for Kalamaki but about the same as London. We tried the salmon which was lovely (but too many bones) and the vegetarian spaghetti which we found much too oily. I've tasted better from a jar! Lovely setting though but didn't go back due to quality of food.

Darren P

and on the subject of price, yes it was expensive by Kalamaki standards but probably cheaper than equivalent restaurants in the UK

Darren P

Without a doubt one of the best restaurants we've ever eaten in. It had quality written all over it. We went three times, the food was faultless each time. Be careful if you have the Pork Ribs as a starter - they are without a doubt the best ribs I've ever tasted but they are just soooo filling! We didn't have a problem with the service - in fact it was very good - although we did eat around 8pm everynight (due to young kids!) so maybe before the busy period

Simon W

Very Dissapointing. Food was good but the service and price let the place down badly. We were overcharged and then short changed. Will be returnung to Kalamaki in 3 weeks but will not return to this restaurant.

Karen R

We have visited Kalamaki three times and have returned to the Zakanoh each time due to the good food. However we have always found the service to be poor, as if the staff know how good their restaurant is. On our last visit, we sat in the garden but when it started to rain we asked to be moved inside. Our request was ignored without any explanation.

Muriel W

People should know that if a taverna does not have its price list and menu out front then it will be expensive. We ate here twice and the food was delicious and we loved the service, not rushed at all because that is our night out. Yes it was the most expensive meals but we knew it would be.

Lindsey R

Had our first meal here. Food was excellent but you paid for it. Was the most expensive meal we had during our stay. Nice seating outside with lots of flowers and music. Can get the same quality food for less though.
