The Great Dane

Restaurants in Argassi

Jackie H  (21 August 2005)

We had the most fantastic meals at the Great Dane!
We met up with our friends Kim and Pete who had heard how good this restaurant was and my first comment was "have we come all the way to Greece to eat an english meal" boy am I pleased we went, the food is fantastic the people are really lovely and friendly and the value was amazing.   We went back three times and our friends who had family and others join them later in the holiday totalled 14 altogether, The Great Dane fitted us all in and nothing was "too much trouble".

Steve T  (20 August 2005)

After reading the comments from other people about this restuarant we were keen to try it.

I'm very happy to say that it exceeded our expectations and agree with everyone else that the food is excellent. You must try the steak platter! really nice steak. We ate 3 times over the two weeks we were there and were very happy, most of the other restuarants versions of steak were chewy and dry despite being advertised as fillet.

They even let our son play on their pc and were very hospitable, with great service too!.

Steve, Tina and Reece.

Lisa   (20 August 2005)

this was one of our two fave places to eat( the other being the family restaurant) i had the meat and potato pie twice and fish and chips once, my boyfriend had the steak platter twice and the steak pie. the staff were verry friendly and the foor was great and the portions were big. it is ran by english people and like family restaurant they went dragging you in. we also had a sunday roast here which was fine but not upto their usual standards.

Louise   (04 August 2005)

We had two weeks in Tsillivi in July 2005, and ate at the Great Dane every night. The quality of the food absolutely first class. Ron Paul Garry and Martina provide an excellent and friendly service to eat at the Great Dane was the icing on the cake of a wonderful holiday. we certainly hope that the Great Dane will be open in 2006 when we return to Tsillivi! we cannot praise Ron and Paul highly enough this is the best restaurant we have ever dined at including the UK. Thanks once again for the wonderful food and brilliant service!! We also noticed people were returning night after night.  We look forward to seeing you next year! This is a fve star restaurant but not five star prices!

Regards Maureen and Tony from Ipswich!

Daniel A  (12 July 2005)

I ate at the great dane twice during my week long visit to zante and i really enjoyed the food the T-bone stake i would have eaten there more but we didnt find it until friday other than that i would deffently eat there if i returned to zante

Topchappy T  (10 July 2005)

THE GREAT DANE IS THE BEST PLACE TO EAT ENGLISH FOOD ON THE WHOLE ISLAND EVEN THE BEST IN GREECE. I WENT THERE TWICE IN JULY AND WAS COMPLETELY SATISFIED. THE STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND FULL OF FUN. THEY MAKE YOU FEEL VERY WELCOME AND IT IS HARD NOT TO GO BACK BECAUSE THE FOOD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.

SO IF YOU WANT A FANTASTIC MEAL  AT A GREAT PRICE GO TO THE GREAT DANE, YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Paul K  (29 March 2005)

well valery i respect youre comment but the food here is fantastic never ever had a bad breakfast and the evening meals are out of this world ron is a fantastic bloke and lets face it he only dresses the same as everyone else in zante and i never heard of any reports of food poisoning from any of his breakfasts so ron keep up the good work matey i will be here in june chilling out in the oasis bar at nite and woofing down my breakfasts here in the morning.

John R  (29 March 2005)

perhaps valerie robbins should stay at home and do her own cooking!!! this is Zante and we love it.

Paul K  (15 March 2005)

i will definitly be eating here i hope ron is still doin thr breakfasts

John R  (09 March 2005)

the great dane is changing the its name to the JAM and will still be operating with all your favorite staff and of course INKA the dog!!!
I believe the restuarant has been revamped with a new look and menu to give even more choice to an already great menu. Mia has been working hard all winter to make the restuarant the best in argassi!!!
also dont forget the Tropicana bar !! Andreas has some new ideas this season along with all the sport, music, cinema.karaoke and quizs
so check it out!!!!

Paul K  (08 March 2005)

Paul K  (25 November 2004)

well said kevlar good point

Kevlar   (18 November 2004)

Inka the so called "scrounging dog" didn't seem to bother anyone else and if it wasn't for tourists feeding her from their plates she wouldn't sit by the tables in the first place. I run the bar across the way and in the 4 years i've run it you are the first to make a complaint about her, she is loved by children and adults alike. She has only picked up this habit from the tourist as she had been taught not to visit peoples tables.

Paul K  (19 October 2004)

well would just like to say that the great dane is fantastic excellent food breakfast is even better ron who does the breakfasts also wears shorts so what you are in greece i can assure you the food is this place is 100% fresh and plentifull as for the dog inca she is so friendly how can anyone talk bad about such a friendly dog

Heather H  (01 October 2004)

We stayed near the Great Dane so it was only a short walk to get to a Reteraunt and a Bar.The staff that worked there were fantastic. There was Jane thhat did the morning and the night shifts. She was helpful she told us places to go and she was really cheerful(even in the morning). Then there was Tina that did the night Shift our whole family loved her. Then there was Mia who was great to we,loved her dog and her puppies. We are really going to miss it there because we all loved it.I am going to miss Tina as I think that I clicked with her the first time we met.we are hoping to go again but we will have to see.

Catherine W  (29 September 2004)

Found the food here lovely - went to actually three times over the two weeks we were there. If you like your mashed potatoes, gravy, crispy roasted chicken and mushy peas this is the place to go. The portions are quite large so you would want to starve yourself beforehand. My boyfriend had lamb cutlets with new potatoes twice and he thought it was lovely also. People who work there are very nice also. Service just a bit slow sometimes.

Michelle B  (19 September 2004)

We ate here once during our stay, my husband enjoyed his steak, I think they put more effort into cooking than cleaning, some of our meals were served on plates that had seen better days, a bit tired looking like the rest of us could do with a bit of a facelift.

Andy & Hayley  (17 September 2004)

If you are on a diet stay clear of this place. Portions enormous. Steak pie was something out of Desparate Dan cartoon. Veggie breakfasts also excellent.

Barbara P  (24 August 2004)

Second time round this year for this restaurant and once again thoroughly enjoyed the three meals we had. The Sunday roast is just like home - but double the size! Had the steak pie which was by far the best pie I have eaten in years and the lamb chop platter was delicious. My husband had the Sunday roast, lamp chop platter and a steak which he said he couldn't fault. All the servings are huge and I felt bad about leaving so much on my plate but they certainly got the better of me! Excellent service, very friendly and easy-going and very good value for money. Thank you to all the staff at Great Dane - we will be back!
Love Barbara & Geoff xxx

Paul K  (14 August 2004)

well i can honestly say the food sevice prices in this place is fantastic had fish chips and mushy peas which was beautiful better than the chippys back home the portions are so big its unbelievable if you are on a diet this place is not for you

Richard L  (12 August 2004)

My wife and I dined at The Great Dane in May. It was fantastic. I would love it if someone could give me a contact number or email to The Great Dane, so I could thank them for their brilliant service and wholesome food. My E-Mail is richard.lewis01@tiscali.co.uk

Chris R  (03 August 2004)

we searched for the greatest restaurant in argassi and on the 8th day we found it. we heard great things about the quizco in the tropicana so we decided to go. it was then we discovered the great dane, the place we spent morning and night eating .the service could not be better with jane jenny and mia you just cant go wrong. the cook paul has got to be the best in zante. when we had finished our meals we were surpriced at the price aswell. they ever have a play ground .what ever you do do not order a large fish (how they managed to capture that beast i have no idea). Mia, im coming back next year to see you. goodbye.

Lauren N  (25 July 2004)

Barbara P  (15 June 2004)

My friend, my daughter and I ate here twice during our 7 day stay and the food, service and atmosphere was lovely. I had a curry the first time which was superb and fried crispy chicken the second time which was equally as good. My daughter had the chicken pie both times and thoroughly enjoyed it. The portions are very large and unfortunately we couldn't finish any of our meals! We were made to feel very welcome and found all the staff to be some of the friendliest we have met. A great place to eat! Barbara, Jen and Jackie xxx

Mia N  (29 May 2004)

Oh, frank. I am sorry that we upset you with our restaurant. But as this country has a freedom of choice, i am positive that you can also find the restaurant where you are happy. As for the rest i promise that the comment of us being a "lager lout" place is highly hurtfull and unfair. Our food is very good and we take bride in our establishment. Our customers come again and again and only complaint we have had until now is that they couldn't find us earlier. I wish you a happy holiday where ever you choose to go. Live and let live...

Paul &  (28 March 2004)

the chicken nuggets chips and mushy peas were great

Sarah D  (08 July 2003)

We did not know it before it moved and we thought it was great. The food was exceptional value for money and the staff were really friendly. Try the fish and chips but be warned the portion sizes can put you off before you start unless you have a stomach the size of an elephant. The childrens portions were very big and the omelettes were delicious.

David   (06 July 2003)

not the same now it's moved, not the same at all.

Ed S  (30 June 2003)

Gr8 stuff! Steak and Kidney, Cheese and Onion - just like beeing at home.
Better than the Greek muck!

I can tell you now... the fish was HUGE and that was only the med !!! and NO I didn't finish it so, come on you bods who love a challenge, try it. Hello to Paul, Tom, an everyone else there well done you lovely people xx

Jo M  (20 June 2003)

Menu is very English, definately not the place to go if you want to try Greek food!

Barry G  (18 June 2003)

**The Pie Shack has moved** it's now in Toms Place (Just past the road bridge over the river.) We made the mistake of going to the one on the river walk and suggest that you don't do the same. Top people, Top service and excellent food are the dailey norm, you must try the steak, curry, fish and of course the pies, in fact try it all. Both us and the kids loved it and can't wait to go back some day (hopefully soon.) A big thank you to Paul, Trish, Gary, Tom and his lovely family.

John S  (13 June 2003)

After another trip to Alykes found the Pie Shack had moved. It is now called the Original Pie Shack. It has moved to Tom's Place. Paul and Trish still running things. Food just as good and the atmosphere warm, welcoming and fun. Tried all the dishes - brilliant. To all old Pie Shackers, be careful, better to try the 'Original'. You'll understand what I mean.

Gwen T  (28 May 2003)

Paul and Trish have moved from the Pie Shack to Toms place just further along the road to Alikanas. Now known as the Original Pie Shack but no change in the food, still brilliant

Pat E  (28 April 2003)

Ann M  (21 December 2002)

Hi Paul & family

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all from Ann & Pete - Melton Mowbray (on holiday in Alykes in June and September 2002) Hope you received the 60's CD we sent you Paul!

Ann M  (15 November 2002)

Brilliant place to eat but beware - you will really put on weight!!! The Sunday roast is great, huge portions and tastes just like at home (fantastic beefy gravy) The fish and chips have to be seen to be believed - my husband ordered the large portion and the fish was as big as the plate!! The steak pies are wonderful too, pastry that melts in your mouth and just full of chunky tender beef. The background music is great too, mostly 60's - especially Beatles. By the way Paul we haven't forgotten we promised to send you a 60's tape or CD - it will be on its way soon!! Hope to see you next year (this time we'll go on a diet first!!!) Kind regards to Paul & all - Ann & Pete

Cara C  (28 October 2002)

give the pie shack a go, believe me you won't be dissappointed. we ate there twice, and if we had found out about it before, we would have gone lots more. sunday lunch, served in the evening, big slice of beef, yorkshire pud,REAL mash spuds, lovely, veg and gravy, couln't be faulted, they even do smaller helpings for the smaller appetite. then there are Pauls pies, i tried the steak pie, lets say i have never tasted a nicer pie anywhere, and i include my own in that. Paul and his staff are brill. the pie shack can be found on Riverside walk in Alykes. If you go to Zante for a holiday give this place a go, once tried you'll go back. cara dave ian copestick derby england

Duncan F  (19 October 2002)

the pie shack was recommended to us by people we met at our apts so we tried it, we had the best meal since we arrived,it was so good we ate there for the rest of our hols, the kids loved it. Paul and Trish cook all the food , we tried nearly all the dishes pies, curries, sausages , etc. all excellent. We will be back next year for more.

Pat E  (09 October 2002)

ALL I CAN SAT IS I LOVE GREEK FOOD BUT THE STEAK AT THE PIE SHACK CANNOT BE BEATEN BY ANY RESAURANT IN THE WORLD IT WAS YUMMY AND I WORK IN A PUB THAT SELLS THE BEST STEAK IN WALES!!!!

Carol B  (29 July 2002)

AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE PIE SHACK,IT HAD TO BE TESTED AND WE WERN'T DISSAPOINTED.WE ORDERED A MEDIUM FISH AND WAS GOBSMACKED AT THE SIZE OF IT(MORE LIKE A SMALL WHALE ON THE PLATE).PAUL AND VAL ARE THE BEST HOSTS YOU COULD HAVE.WE WILL BE BACK,MY KIDS INSIST. THE MAD IRISH MAN PAUL AND FAMILY

Paul B  (22 July 2002)

The food here is absolutely fabulous. Paul and Val and their partners made everyone feel at home!!! Definetly worth a few visits during your stay.

Andy K  (14 July 2002)

Carn't be beaten and must be tried. Friendly atmosphere, great mince beef pie, give it a try

David A  (01 July 2002)

FANTASTIC CURRIES MASSIVE PORTIONS AND THE KIDS LOVED THE TWEENY PIES, IT MADE A CHANGE FOR THEM NOT TO HAVE FISH FINGERS OR CHICKEN NUGGETS!! THIS YEAR THEY'VE PUT THE MAJORITY OF THE TABLES OUTDOORS WHICH MADE IT MORE COMFORTABLE WHEN IT WAS 32 DEGREES AT 8 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT!!

Adrian T  (21 October 2001)

I cannot recommend the pie shack too much. The food was absolutely outstanding and the portions was huge. All the best to all concerned and keep up the good work for next season. Also i have to say it was the only time that my 4 year old daughter ate properly during our stay.

Glen W  (16 October 2001)

we ate at the Pie Shack three times on our holls and it was Great. The pies and the curries were brill and I eat the Monster Monty breakie and finished it Iam a chef in Wales so my opinion should be worth something good luck to all at the Pie Shack.
